I have only just installed this, but after testing teh booting and loading a few apps it seems the fan spinning seems far less aggressive. I just tested opening the browser and the fan did not even spin the first time. I am also as I am typing playing a HD youtube video and the fan is not making a peep.
Now of course this could be placebo, it could be only because I have just switched it on. However I really get the feeling there is some tangiable improvement. The fan still comes on, just not as bad.

What BIOS version were you using previous to this?
I have BIOS A07, and the fan is reasonably well behaved. It does not go from idle to full speed as people had complained with the L502x. Mine does often run at a slow speed which is quiet. -
A07 doesnt seem to be posted anymore.
Was there an A08 version?
Does anyone have any official info of the improvements this BIOS has? -
I saved a bunch of the dell original bios files from the site, I may check later if I can upload an older bios to you, I think I had the original A07, however I didnt noticed about any A08 version, they jumped directly from A07 to A09 as far I know.
they also ask about two types of bios:
DELL A06 bios
and
A09 QUANTA bios
and they just put the QUANTA update tagged as recomended while they tagged the DELL one as important. -
What BIOS are Dell shipping out new Laptops with? I'm from the UK and just had mine shipped.

my L502X came with A07 and it behaves reasonably ok, not as well as L501X that I had. a click on a link can trigger the fan on and sometime it is on for a very short period, 5 seconds.
I installed A09 last night and the fan ran very long, way longer than normal. I was too concerned and downgrade back to A06, (found on dell site). and soon later I downgrade to A07, found from forum here.
I am staying with A07 for now until I see more positive report.
I noticed that A09 and A07 have the same size 9,868kB -
Changelog is up:
So, as far as i know, there is no reason that the fan might be less noisy or better regulated -.- (this issue will never be fixed by the Vendor i could bet!)

A09 installed here, fan seems to not be running while using battery, but they pulled A09 from their website....
-
The fan still spins on and off with A09 for me. The only workaround is to use power saving mode in Windows along with using the Intel graphic processor by default like with A06 and A07. The fan does not turn on as often in power saving mode but it still happens.

I've just updated the Bios to A09 and the fan is behaving much better. Thanks for the tip!

I've downloaded the A09 some days ago, but didn't installed it yet... the laptop is running the A07 version yet, and I'm waiting to discover that it'll benefit from the upgrade before do it... is there any conclusive aspect about it, or nothing for the time being?

im having problems since upgrading to a09 with my laptop sometimes not recognizing my sata caddy drive. i downgraded to a06(will upgrade to a07 as we speak). i notice dell have a new release date version of 2/23/2012 for version a09? did they tweak a09 again because i remember downloading a09 over 2 weeks ago. Weird.
