Aah - you did not mention that earlier!

I would not buy a refurbished laptop from any manufacturer!

Dell refurbished and MOST other manufacturers' refurbished carry a standard warranty so it is as if it was new. I've had good luck with the Dell Outlet for my Latitude 13, my E6410 had some minor issues but doing the return was very painless.

I bought a refurb L502x and love it. You might be able to use a $100 off XPS system coupon-- look on techbargains or one of the other discount sites. I used a coupon like that, even though it didn't specifically say it was for a refurb.

Also, this is not for everyone, but you can return the portion of your warranty which covers the 'in home' service for 55 bucks. It means that if something goes wrong you've got to mail the computer in, rather than have a tech come to your house. I chose to do this, 'cause I'd rather just drop the thing off at UPS, but some folks like the option of having the dude come over. I've heard bad things about the techies who drop in, that they don't know the XPS, don't know how to change a screen, etc etc, but there's no guarantee that the techs who work on it at the shop will be better.

I paid a bit less, but also got less HD space and no TV tuner and a weaker graphics card and less RAM (which I did just upgrade myself.) I did get a 9 cell. Overall I'd say you've got a good deal, and an especially good one if you can apply one of the 100 dollar off coupons.

    Good luck.

Thank you so much Larrondo. Can I ask a question? How long have you had it now? Any problem so far?

Also does it come as new or there are a few dents? (The one above is certificated refurb)

I got two-- the first I returned because it had the 720p screen (which is horrible.) Both of the units were perfect. I subscribed to a thread on Slickdeals where a bunch of people bought refurbs and other than a few scratches on the battery or something, most were perfect (unless they are specifically labeled 'scratch and dent.') You get a year warranty from Dell. Buy with an AMex and get another year on top of that, or buy an extended warranty from Squaretrade (look for a coupon for them too-- usually you can get 25% off or so.)

With two years of warranty I am very comfortable and confident in my purchase.

BTW here is a coupon to try for the XPS--

Dell Home & Office Slickdeals: Coupon Codes & Promo Codes for Dell Coupons, HP Coupons, Apple Coupons, Grocery Coupons, Restaurant Coupons

You can call and get help from a sales associate and tell him your friend used this coupon and it worked. Also, they have models you can't see on the website, if there's a slightly different config you want.

Certified refurbished should be good. Scratch and Dent is a real hit or miss. I've seen bent up keyboards, missing screws, palmrest not flush, the horrors. I've also seen pristine units with maybe a scratch.

I have the same specs except for the HDD I have 500GB, I got it for $930 with 2 yr warranty and it is not refurbished.
After placing the order I called up DELL saying I want to cancel the order and they offered me $100 discount to keep the order and after a couple of days I called up again saying I dont need 2yr warranty and they offered me another $70 discount so in all 170 off.

I would say not a good deal for a Refurb.

Thank you for pointing me out. I guess you don't have backlit keyboard& tv tuner too (I know it's not necessary and not expensive to add one, isn't it?). However there is $150 discount code for this too. So I will get it around $809. Do you think it's still not worth?

For me it's ok for refurb because it's as new and even it has a few scratch (not major) I will be ok with that because I will have it scratch anytime soon when I use it. So it will save some money for me. what do you think?

Pretty sneaky Sag P. Seems like you got a monster deal. 930 was after all the discounts?

Basically I got a refurb that has the same processor, Blu Ray, FHD screen, backlit keyboard, +a 9 cell. However, only 4 gigs of Ram and a 500 gig HD, no TV tuner, and more basic wifi card. It was 880 minus 100=780. I returned the 'in home' portion of the warranty for another 55 off so it was 725 + tax. If OP can get the 100 off and have it come in at 860 it seemed like an OK deal, 'cause the TV tuner and bluetooth and extra RAM and bigger HD would probably be worth an extra hundred, although I personally don't need a HD that big and wanted to upgrade the ram myself, since it's cheaper.

But if OP's choice is the refurb deal (especially with no 100 off) or the deal you got, yours is obviously better.

So your system, a refurb, for 810 or Sag's for 930, but he doesn't have the backlit keyboard or TV tuner and his HD is smaller? Now I'd say there's a decent argument for the refurb. I mean, if you were buying new, Dell would charge 80 for the larger HD, 40 for the backlit keyboard, and about 100 for the tuner, right? Seems like you're getting good value.

But are you sure the coupon is for 150 off? I thought that was only the 17 inch ones.

Thanks again Larrondo, and thanks for the website that provides code too. I found out that I can get $150 off (not only $100). So it will be only $809 including tax. Can I ask, how can you return 'in home' portion of the warranty? You do it after you purchase or after you receive the laptop? Do you think if I return it, they will give me discount? since it's free in the package.

Also what do you think about this one compare to my first spec? Should I go for this one or stick with the first one. (The below spec is $40 more expensive)

    ----------------------------------------------------------
XPS L502X - $999.00 (including vat but excluding discount code)

better - Processor: Intel Core i7-2720QM processor
lower - 500 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
better - 9 Cell Primary Battery
    better - 8 GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz (2 DIMMs)
lower - no TV tuner (which I don't think it's necessary? do you think I should have?)
    lower?? - Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030

edit:: having revised.. I am more on first spec (with tv tuner) but still please advice.

Yes, I tried and it $150 off :) Also went on chatting with them. They gave me the same code and say it's $150 discount.

Now I am hesitant between my first one and second spec above. Please give me some advice. Thank you so much again for your replies which are really helpful :)

When you buy your computer they send you something about the terms of your in-home warranty-- at least they did with me and a bunch of other people at the time. Most people probably don't bother to read the fine print, but it does say you can return the in-home portion for 55 bucks. I can't guarantee it will work this way for you, but it did for me.

I'm not an expert, so I can't really speak as to which system is better, and a lot of it is personal preference. I felt like 500 gigs was big enough for a hard drive, 'cause external storage is so cheap. I also decided I didn't really need the TV tuner. I did want the 9 cell battery, because long battery life was important to me. If you buy the first system you looked at, you could upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs for another 35-40 bucks or so (through Newegg,) but then the two systems cost exactly the same. So-- all things being equal, do you want the 9 cell and faster processor (that you will probably never need) or a bigger HD and TV tuner? I'd probably go for the 9 cell, just because I think that will be more important to me than the TV tuner. But that's me.

Also, if you talk to a customer service rep you might be able to get everything you want in a slightly cheaper system. If it were me, I'd be fine with the i72630, so I might try to get a cheaper one that doesn't have the TV tuner OR faster processor.
