    Greetings,

    Glad I found this site.

I have a Studio 17 w/Intel i7 Q820M and the ATI HD 4600 series video card. The computer is too big to lug back and forth from work. I nearly knock people out when I take it out of my pack on the train.

I purchased the XPS 15 L502x model with the i7-2720QM and the nvidia GT540M

The first thing I did was to install Silent Hunter IV. On the Stuido@1920x1080 I never had a performance issue with ATI 4600 series. With the XPS there is a definite performance degradation between the two.

Is the ATI 4600 series a better performer than the nvidia GT 540M? It'd really suck if my performance went backward as the price went upward. Just tell me it ain't so.

How can you tell if a program or game is using the GT 540M and not the Intel?

I apprciate any feedback about this.

    Thanks,

    -Matt

Don't worry, the GT 540 M should be faster then any 46xx Mobility card.

Download the latest drivers from the NVIDIA website, Uninstall the old driver, run Driver Sweeper ( Phyxion.net) and install the new drivers.

You can force your notebook to run a specific program on the dGPU instead of the SB iGPU, somewhere in your Optimus settings (look for it in your system tray). Someone else posted how to do it somewhere in the L702x thread.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I just checked the nvidia site and there are no drivers for this model yet. Typical.

I was going to wipe the computer and do a fresh Win7 install, but the lack of drivers dictate a wait.

    Thanks again.

Search for beta drivers and you will find the latest driver with support for 540M.

In NVIDIA control panel under 3d Settings/Manage 3d settings you can select the preferred graphics processor for each program, make sure the 540M is selected for your game...

Yes this could be the answer since the integrated Intel HD in Sandy Bridge is quite good as well, averaging 5000+ in 3Dmark06.

But of course the GT540M in XPS 15 is much better. :)
