I just ordered a XPS L701X laptop online and its installed memory is 4gb. I want to increase its memory to 16gb but I want to know how many sockets are there in the XPS for installing memory and does it has support 16 gb of 1333mhz DDR3. Its chipset is HM57.
I know it can support 16gb memory but I am not sure if it can support 16gb of 1333 Mhz DDR3.
Second question is how maximum hard drive I can install in XPS L701X.
    Thanks.

The maximum is 8 GB DDR3.

You can only fit 2.5" 9.5mm SATA notebook drives in there. You should be able to do up to 2 x 750 GB 7200 rpm drives. You could also do another 750 GB if you lose the optical drive.

The maximum is not 8GB, there are many users who have installed and using >8GB.

There are 4 slots in the xps17.
And a 4GB SoDIMM in each will work perfectly fine.

If you really wanna go mad you could find some 8GB SoDIMMS for 32GB RAM, but i think they are only available to a few OEMs for an upgrade of around$2000 per stick

It depends on the CPU you are getting with an i7 you get 4 slots and can fit 16G of RAM. With an i5 you will only get 2 slots and can fot 8G of RAM.

I read somewhere that with the XPS 17 equipped with an I7 740Qm, you can install an SSD up to 256GB and 16GB of ram DDR3 1333mhz (This will be my next upgrade.. :D)

You should be able to install any sized ssd. I tink at the time only 256GB ones were available, but intel and others are launching larger drives very soon. 600GB+

yes it will take 16GB without a doubt, it may be able to take upto 32GB like the dell precision M6500 series. for ~$10000

It is your first post, so I just give you a valuable tip.

Before posting a separate thread please read the general thread on the XPS 17 L701X.

    Dell-xps-17-l701x-thread

There you can find most of your questions. And if you can not find an answer there, that place is the best location to post it.

Thank you, by the way, I am planning to buy an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD 60GB, I was wondering what's the difference between SATA II and III and if the XPS 17 motherboard support it.. :)

Do you know anything by the chance? ;)

Do not buy a vertex 2.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/555242-ocz-shipping-25nm-ssds-customers-not-happy-over-lack-change.html

SATAII runs at 3Gb/s, SATAIII runs at 6Gb/s.

The L701x is only SATAII, so you will not see the benefits of a SATAIII SSD. (it will still work though).
If you were to wait till the L702x was back up on dell then that would support SATAIII.

Best SATAII drives currently are Intel x25m g2 (80GB+), samsung 470 series, and crucial/micron.
For SATAIII go for crucial or wait till intel g3s r out

    Thank you for the tips!!
I have been discussing and reseaching about this Vertex 25nm topic all morning...
I was discussing it with SplinterPC who just realized it..
    Here the post:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...dell-xps-17-l701x-thread-248.html#post7161465

I will have to chance to get one Vertex 2 60GB for 30 pounds, or an Intel 25M 80GB for 70 pounds, which I want to use mainly for the OS...
So you too recommend me the Intel anyway?

Nothing wrong with SandForce, the Durawrite allows for cheaper flash NAND chips to be used. However, the way OCZ introduced 25nm was wrong, and I will not be inclined to purchase another one.
