I have this usb 3.0 cover
Focalprice.com offers Genuine SSK SHE072 2.5" USB 3.0 SATA Hard Disk Drive HDD External Enclosure Case (Black) ,discount Genuine SSK SHE072 2.5" USB 3.0 SATA Hard Disk Drive HDD External Enclosure Case (Black),Genuine SSK SHE072 2.5" USB 3.0 SATA Har

    and hard drive is Toshiba 2.5 640GB 7200RPM (MK6461GSY).

When i connect it to usb 3.0 port , it starts and works fine but keeps disconnecting and reconnecting on its own in every 15 to 20 minutes.
I have now connected an external power adapter to hard disk as well, and it is not disconnecting anymore.
So does that mean usb power is not enough or 640GB 7200RPM is just too much for usb port???

Edit: Now having problem with external power adapter connected also.....

That is strange as I've got a 1.5TB Verbatim external hard drive connected to one of the usb 3.0 ports and it worked fine... Perhaps it has something to do with the hard drive enclosure? I've noticed that I'd have to ensure that the external hard drive is disconnected from the usb 3.0 when I power on the laptop as it will just shut down the XPS 17 even though I've set the XPS 17's internal hard drive as the first boot device.

    Strange...

I believe so. 1.5TB Verbatim External Hard Drive

I'm not sure whether it has anything to do with the BIOS. Perhaps Dell should update the XPS 17's BIOS to rectify the problem?

I don't think there is any issue regarding insufficient power because my 1.5TB comes with its independent power supply. I'm not happy as I would have to disconnect the external hard drive before rebooting the laptop or switching it on. Otherwise it will just crash the laptop even though I've selected the laptop's internal hard drive as the first boot.

Even their Updated A04 bios(L502x) does not help?I heard the USB 3.0 problem is quite prevalent in L502x too
