So I have the following problem. Just bought yesterday a Netgear WNDR4500 (N900) and I tried to connect the XPS 17 to the network with the SSID running the 5ghz wifi.

XPS could not see the 5ghz wifi, I could only see the 2.4 ghz wifi. I know the 5 ghz wifi is working since my Ipad and Mac book Air are connected to it. Even my xbox 360 s didn't see the 5ghz (another story).

    When I ordered this laptop I got the low end (I think) Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1000.

So does the XPS 17 support the 5ghz wifi ?
if it does what can i do, if not are there any options ?

I don't have my specs in front of me as my computer is at home.

The 17 supports 5GHz, yes. Mine connects to it fine. Your problem is the Intel 1000 card only supports the 2.4GHz freq ;) The 6230/6300 cards support the 5GHz. So check which you have, if, as you think, you have the 1000 card, then you are either SOL or will have to swap the card.

Make sure you have selected Auto for 5ghz under channel width in device manager.
