I've been experiencing the dreaded video card symptoms (go 7400) so i decided to open up my machine and take a look at the heatsink and redo the themal paste on the cpu etc....

To my surprise, there was no form of themal compund/pad on the GPU chip  The CPU used a sort of silicon (which i plan to replace), the Nrth bridge had a pad and the GPU had nothing AT ALL (see pictures)

Looking at the chips and the heatsink, I would say the GPU was the same height as the nrth bridge but i cant be sure if themal paste would be enough ( I know it could do with something either way). I was considering doing the copper sheet mod so wanted to double check the exiting setup.

Since my existing setup doesn't seem like much help, has anyone opened up a M1210 and able to confirm the setup?

    Thanks in advance

It was probably just because the way it was designed did not really require anything of the sort, but now that you've discovered it, it probably would be best to put some Arctic 5 on just to be safe.

how would the GPU "not require anything"? it needs thermal contact to the heatsink (thermal compound) or the GPU will burn out

to the OP: if there was no thermal compound on the gpu>heatsink contact area im surprised your GPU didnt burn out, what were your temps?
