As a lot of you my know, I'm going to be purchasing an XPS M1330 soon. However, I have a few questions about the battery life with certain specs and the heat that will be produced with them.
1) With the 2.2 ghz intel core 2 duo processor, should I expect an increase in heat compared with the 2.0 ghz?
2) Should I expect an increase in heat if I opt for the 7200 RPM 160 GB hard drive instead of the normal 5400 RPM 160 GB hard drive?
3) Will the 7200 RPM hard drive consume more battery life than the 5400 RPM hard drive?
I may have more questions in the future, but for now, thanks in advance.

I think the heat should be about the same for the processors, but perhaps the higher RPM hard drives will give off more heat since it'll also consume more power over a given time. A 7200RPM hard drive should consume more battery since it's spinning faster, but I believe that there are trade offs in term of faster seek time so that it's a wash in the end.
I just ordered a m1330 myself, and I'd like to know how hot the notebook gets. I'm sure I'll find opinions if I peruse the Dell section of NBR. Any further comments would be great. -
Not sure how I can answer you guys but there isn't much heat. The palmrests get a bit warm during gaming, but only a bit for my m1330.
-
How about 3 GB of memory? Would that consume more battery life/give off more heat?
-
You won't notice it at all

This might be a strange question but since we are on the topic, where is the hottest spot for your 1330? Mine seems to be right where the wireless card is, is that where everyone else finds it hot? Also, it is actually hot enough to be uncomfortable on my lap, is that normal? By the way, Merry Christmas everyone!
-
Where is the wireless located?
Merry Christmas! -
The wireless cards are located under a square piece of plastic right in the middle of the laptop at the front, closest to you when sitting and using the laptop. Does that make sense? Merry Christmas

yes to your first three questions - sadly the laws of physics still apply -
"no" to your 3gb ram question. it is negligible and not of concern compared to your hd issue -
Do you really need 3gb of ram anyways? Haha.
I'll probably only need two. -
Well, with the $799 deal, the 3 GB of memory comes standard, and you can't opt for anything less.
How much battery life am I looking at with the my specs (in signature)? -
exact same specs as what I ordered though mine is coming with 6 cell and 9 cell battery. Blue tooth. 4 yr warranty 1 yr lojack.
nice deal. -

Will it be hot enough where it'll be uncomfortable on the lap?
Also, with my specs, how much battery life should I expect with a 6 cell battery? -
Thanks for letting me know where you find your machine the hottest. Do you find it too hot? Given that mine is hot in a different place, I think I have some sort of defect. At any rate I will call tech support and see if they are any help! Unfortunately I dont' know how hot is too hot and it is impossible to know if my temperature is too hot as it is personal and subjective (unless it leaves an actual burn or something, lol!). Much thanks!

I have theexact same problem with heat in my new XPS M1330 and it does get uncomfortably hot in the bottom. Did tech support do something about it?
-
I have the same issue. Got the laptop last week and the wirlss card compartment and the top the touchpad get too hot too soon (within 15 mins!). Did u get yours replaced or repaired? Did it solve the problem? I want to make sure before I return it. Thanks. -
Hi, I got a replacement but it had the same level of heat. I basically concluded that the laptop was not running hot but was normally this hot. I think as long as it does not burn that it is running within normal perameters. I also think an investment in a notebook cooler might be in order, lol! I tried other laptops and got the same issue. I think it is just the way modern laptops run, sigh.....
-
So far how do ulike the M1330? Any other issues? -
yeah.. the WLAN card is the hottest place.. same problem, seems to be normal

i recently worked on my laptop in the bedroom with the AC on; my laptop's battery was very low and so i plugged it in to charge while i worked. after about 40 minutes, i heard a slight noise like a smoke alarm. it was so faint that i thought it was coming from the next apartment or something. silence. more work. beep, beep, beep. again, i thought it was coming from somewhere else. to make a long story short, i decided to leave the room and shut down my laptop and that's when i touched my power adapter. ouch! it was REALLY hot and the sound, i guess, was coming from the charger! is that possible???
i was shocked as hell. i mean, i woudn't think in a million years that the charger (the rectangular piece) would get that hot.
a day later, i went to a public library and plugged my charger into a wall socket and into my laptop and i checked the heat level of the charger every 10 minutes. during the first 30 minutes or so, i was kinda hot but not very hot; after that, the heat level actually dropped to just warm.
is this normal??? are there known issues with the charger for m1330's??? is the heat level normally higher at the beginning of the charge?
thanks for any help or info you might have. -
No. If you power adapter gets that hot it is not normal. Dell makes several power adapters for the dell m1330. Is your power adapter the 90 watt version 19.5v x 4.62 amp = 90 watts? If not you should tell dell to get you the 90 watt power adapter. They make smaller ones that output less watts for those who get an m1330 without an nvidia gpu or a low spec cpu.
