what does MSN usually broadcast @ on the webcam? Will it make a big difference in quality since the setup w/ the LED backlighting is only available w/ a .3 mp camera?

VGA is more than enough imo. The resolution of the .3mp camera is 640x480 which is more than the typical MSN-webcam window..

Yeah, it's unfortunate they couldn't stuff the 2MP camera into the LED version, but seriously, how often do you need to take high-resolution pictures of yourself?

Besides, we barely have enough power and bandwidth to encode and stream a true 640x480 video feed, let alone 2MP.

Yes, 640x480 is more than enough for typical video chatting. Don’t worry about the 2MP camera on the standard LCD. Cos you really can’t stream at that resolution anyways. Even 1MP is too much.

A laptop is not a cam. VGA is fine. Don't forget that the native resolution of the screen is 1MP only! Even a WSGXA+ screen won't be enough for a 2MP image... And you would need a very decent bandwith to send this image + sound. Honestly, it's just marketing to promote a 2 or 3MP webcam on a laptop... The cheapest digital cam will produce better photos.

I don't use MSN messenger, and don't video chat either, but it's my understanding that all of these, yahoo, msn included, stream at QVGA. Even the VGA is superfluous. Correct me if I am wrong.

I thought msn chats were 320 x 240 (qvga) as sesshomaru says.. but then again i dont use webcams.. Just go out if you want to talk to someone face to face

If it's for business use then I guess it may be handy..but any video conference i've ever been in was in a board room where you don't use your own cam..

Yeah, most chat apps use QVGA or even 160x120. To get VGA res streaming on Skype, you have to hack some parameters in the config file, and people have said not to bother unless you have dual-core + gobs of bandwidth. 1GB is worthless right now as a video tool, it'd only be useful for "photobooth" snapshots.
