hey guys just got an xps m1330 product red a couple of days ago..
little help with wireless ? i've got the wireless n inbuilt card in there (intel 4965AGN), but connecting to my home 802.11b/g router I seem to only get about 5.5 mega bit per second at first then it drops to 1 megabit once i start browsing/copying files over.
I have updated the drivers from the dell website and I read about disabling the bluetooth improving wireless speed but still hasn't fixed it.
Things I have tried :
- Only setting the router on 802.11g mode. Laptop still only gets very slow speeds.
- Tried updated drivers from both dell.com and intel.com
- Disabled bluetooth
- Had charger plugged in, it is not a power saving issue.
- Installed vista SP1
- Gone through advanced wireless properties and changed things like 'throuput enhancement' and 'transmit power' etc, still no luck.
- I have a desktop machine that is sitting next to the laptop that uses a USB wireless dongle and get full 54 mega bit per second from the router instantly. So it is not a range issue as the strength is 'very good' on the laptop settings.
- Tried messing around with 802.11b/g router settings by changing the band etc, still no luck.
- There are no cordless phones or anything nearby
I opened the back of the laptop up and saw this. Was told by another xps m1330 user that this looks fine :

Any ideas !?!

Welcome to my world. If you find a solution let me know.

There should be a grey wire in the center pin.

In any event, this is only a 802.11g router, not n, so it really should be able to hit 54 megabit per second without any problems .....
Doesn't make sense, could someone confirm whether there needs to be a 3rd wire hooked up to the 4965AGN card to get decent wireless speed from 802.11g ? -
Well having a third wire will give you better range (regardless of whether or not your router is N) and therefore, you achieve better speeds.

I think it's possible to move the card to the other slot to be able to connect that gray wire you are talking about. I believe its also a mini Pci-e port so you may be able to install your intel wireless card on that slot.
I have the Dell Wireless-N on my M1530 and i have only 2 antenna wires connected to it but never had any problem with range. I remember kinda seeing a gray wire on mine too. I opened mine awhile back and i only remember vaguely what i saw so take it with a grain of salt.
Edit: If you have a USB wifi dongle you can try it to see if you get a better reception just to validate your internal wireless reception problem. don't forget to disable your internal card before installing the dongle.
goodluck! -
Yeah i know this thread is old...BUT
i just found this on my lappy
I have a LED screen and the gray wire is not connected...now I've done some research and it has bee found (here) that dell said this is for N technology that is supposed to come out next year and that it is not in the market and does not affect performance
I say this is bull to be honest...if you paid for it you should get it...
I was about to change it to the other PCI slow but stopped because everywhere it says to install it in the labeled wifi slot.
Has anyone tried it out...and is there any performance increase
I want to argue with Dell now...this makes me mad that you pay for something and they kinda half @$$ it
XPS M1330 wireless problem - very slow !!!
