Hi guys,
I am presently trying to replace my old dell d410. The obvious replacement is the E4300 but there are so many negative 'views' being expressed that I am a bit anxious. I have also discovered that an xps with all 'bells and whistles' including a 128Gb SSD is about the same as an equivalent spec E4300 which does not have the SSD. So basically I am trying to work out whether to go for the M1330 with SSD or the E4300 without. Now the M1330 is generally very well reviewed and my colleague has one of the earlier machines. The only thing that puts me off slightly is the weight (though would the SSD result in some vital grams being shed?).
So really what I would like to know is how much improvement one gets in performance of the XPS with the addition of the SSD? I guess this is a very difficult question to answer but it is somewhat critical in deciding whether the extra half kilo of weight of the XPS is acceptable in light of the additional performance.
Thanks for your time
Adam

I have owned an XPS M1330 for the past year and I have been very happy with it. Right now I have it hooked up to my 22" widescreen flat panel and I have started using it as my primary laptop recently (replacing my Latitude D830). The connectivity and integrated optical drive are nice to have in such a small laptop and it is easy to tote if I need to take it with me. I'm running Ubuntu on it and it is great.
I wouldn't buy the SSD just yet. They are still really expensive. I'm waiting for for prices to drop some more before doing that upgrade. You can always upgrade later. Just my two cents. -
Thanks for the prompt reply.... so that would be one vote towards the non-SSD option!

By weight....honestly if you can feel the difference between a couple of grams let me know...because I'm selling you off to a mad scientist as an experiment maker...
The one and only thing is the price...you can get a couple of "cheap" ones off newegg for about $200 (don't know how much dell charges) but they don't compare in raw GB storage space (although it's a lappy so if you have a external HDD at home you are more than set with even 64gb's)
Your choice if you have the extra $$$ and don't mind spending them in today's messed up world -
Actually I am a mad scientist and it is the University who will be buying it
The price isnt so much an issue because the SSD XPS costs the same as the non-SSD E4300.... so it comes down to a weight versus performance issue.
So we have:
XPS M1330, 2.4GHz, 4Gb RAM, traditional HD, 2.1kg
vs
E4300, 2.4GHz, 4Gb RAM, 128Gb SSD, 1.7kg
I think the weight difference is easy to differentiate, it is more than a can of coke afterall! -
Id definitely go for the E4300.
XPS m1330 with the Nvidia card is a troublesome machine. Besides its outdated. The newer Montevina platform will offer better performance.
I wouldnt really make a big deal out of SSD's. I sure wouldnt let it influence my decision when buying a notebook. -
Well, I would make a big deal out of SSDs
Quiet, Cool, and Fast. Also Dell offers the Samsung SSDs very cheaply.
The Nvidia card in the 1330 may cause you some worries though. (check the copper mod threads, etc). However if your not going to game on your computer you can always go with the Intel X3100, and also improve your battery life.
