I received my XPS M1530 yesterday with the standard WXGA (1280x800) screen and although I can't find out what the LCD manufacturer is, Hardware ID comes up as Default Monitor, it doesn't suffer that much from the much discussed graininess. I have, however, noticed that whilst viewing a dark background the bottom third of the screen is much brighter that the rest of it. I don't think this is backlight bleed as such but more like a poor viewing angle effect with the truelife screen.
Does anyone else suffer with this, is it a fault or, as Dell TS said, completely normal with the XPS screens. It's not that noticeable under normal desktop conditions, only when I view anything with a dark background.
As I said I don't have a problem with grain and the brightness is adequate.

I have the same as above but my screen is very dark, mine come up with default monitor also... what make is this?

C'mon WXGA guys, anyone else experiencing this problem?
BTW I can't find the manufacturer details, the Hardware ID comes up as default_monitor and there's no clue under my original settings tab on the Dell web site for my service tag. Any other ideas?
If it turns out to be a Samsung screen, are there any alternatives for the 1280x800 screen, all the talk about LG screens seems to be limited to the WXGA+ and above. -

I have the exact same problem, I have a CPT - Chunghwa.

I have the same problem. CPT
... It helps when you view the screen from a higher angle.

I have the same issue with my 1530 received about a week ago. Horizontal viewing angles are barely OK for looking at websites or documents, completely useless for watching DVDs. Vertical viewing angles are quite poor.
I've looked at a lot of other notebooks displayed in stores (HP, Toshiba, Apple) and haven't seen angles that bad.
Otherwise, the screen is grain free, clean whites, sharp and quite bright.
My Hardware ID says it's a CPT screen, however, my online configuration says it's a Samsung RP636. Hmmmm?
Anyway, called Dell Customer Care (Canada) and said I was quite dissatisfied with the screen quality on this supposedly higher end notebook. After a little discussion and haggling, I agreed to have them send me another 1530 to assess. If I'm not satisfied with that one either I'll be returning it for a refund. -
Yes, I'm also facing problem regarding vertical viewing angle in my new 1525.

That's my issue with my 1530: 1680x1050 screen; while I don't have the grain issue some have discussed here, the backlight is terribly "blotchy." At a distance, a static image looks OK, but up close in regular use you think you're chasing shadows.
The screen is a Samsung, and a CR just replaced it (sadly with another Samsung), and while the overall screen is brighter, the general effect is the same. Frustrating. The screen on my 3.5 year old Inspiron 9100 doesn't have this problem at all.
Still considering options; tech advised me I was within my window to have them build me a new unit if I wasn't happy. Problem is, I don't know if a new one will be any better. Very frustrating. Only problem is I have the HD on this box partitioned and configured the way I want it, tho he advised I could arrange an HD swap when the new unit arrived.
Frustrating that it has to come to this. If they would just send a decent screen with the unit, and it appears its supposed to be the LG, they'd solve a lot of problems, but I guess that's not in their "bottom line" picture right now.

Hello. I've also got a wxga. Under Vista I also got the system info 'default monitor' but with XP as OS the display is identified as a SEC3358, so I've got a Samsung.
The display itself suffers from light to let's say medium 'graininess' and also the lighter bottom but I thought that to be normal as I have seen this effect on other notebooksbut even if it's not normal, it is something i could live more easily with than with the grain imo
