I am looking to upgrade to a 9-cell for my Dell XPS M1530 and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts as to the quality of the replacement batteries you can find on eBay that aren't Dell branded vs. the OEM ones from Dell. Please let me know what you think.

I would never use non-branded batteries for any expensive device...not even for a mobile phone. Apart from the quality, which could cause much less battery time than branded batteries, it can overload the more delicate components of your computer, if the specs are not 100% the same.
Low quality batteries can also start fires or explode. -

I would stay away from cheap ebay batteries.
I believe that Dell-brand batteries are a complete rip-off unfortunately, but that is still what I would buy. I have seen some very dodgy (potentially damaging/dangerous) knock-off batteries. When you consider that a battery is basically a device that stores a huge amount of chemical energy, you realise that you really don't want to be skimping on quality or safety. -
I am happy with the battery I ordered from www.discountelectronics.com

got a Dell 9 cell for my XPS1530 for about half-price from this ebay store:

genuine Dell part, excellent shipping time, works great and about double the battery time than the 6 cell. -
My own two experiences with an ebay battery have been excellent - I took the precaution of buying only from sellers with very high feedback and established battery ebay shops - in both cases the batteries worked as well as the originals.
Just anecdotal evidence I know... -

I normally buy genuine OEM batteries from fleabay; be careful on there though or you will end up with a cheap knockoff that will likely not work as well or as long. I also never buy batteries on ebay unless they have a picture and I can see the dell logo in writing on it
