Hi All
I got my m1530 on the last week. It is awesome. I dont have any problem.
My HHD space is 160GB 7200RPM.
C: = 136GB
D: = 10 GB
Totally it is showing only 146GB.
I dont know where is the remaining 14GB?
In the C: I have a data for only 18GB. But currenly my C: is showing as 100GB. Where is the remaining 18GB? Please help me to find that. Where can I check my HDD manufacturer?
Totally 32GB is missing....

there are probably two things that you have to take into account here.
the first is that the 160GB that the hard drive manufacturers advertise with is based on the decimal meaning that 1Kb is considered 1000 bytes to them. In the rest of the computing world, 1 Kb is considered 1024 bytes as binary. this goes all the way up in megabytes and gigabytes. thus the platters themselves can probably hold 160GB of data, but if using some kind of file system that is based on decimal. All the file systems i know of use binary, thus one discrepancy.
in all actuality, you are still getting the space that the hard drive manufacturer promised, you just utilize it in a different fashion. most feel that they are being jipped and the hdd manufacturers are basically tricking consumers.
other than that, a lot of hard drives these days are coming with HPA or host protected areas or DCO, device configuration overlays. an hpa is basically an area that cant be touched and typically used for things like recovery to even hiding data. its one of the first places to check for incriminating data in computer forensics. a DCO is somewhat similar, although they are most often used to make a hard drive appear smaller then it actually is. This is basically for the benefit of manufacturer. say company x makes a 320gb drive. they can sell it like that for a premium, or then can use a DCO to make it 250gb to make it appear as an other offering and sell it as such thus appearing to appeal to a wider market, but not having to deal with additional production facilities.
in the case of my 1530, space was also needed for the dell media direct (XP type partition) and as you mentioned, the recovery partition (D -
160 GB formatted is about 146 GB. The rest isn't missing, I am not sure how you are figuring out your numbers though.
