    Hi everyone,

I just recieved my XPS M1530 but i found this ticking sound pretty annoying..

I THINK i is from the harddrive and it does it once in a while, and when it does, it sounds like a bunch of papers being crumbled together, you know what kind of sound im talking about? the Xxxhhsshhhshhh...

Anyways, it happens once in a while and i just wanna know if it is normal or not.. :p

    Thanks!

Its called thrashing. And it happens every once in a while, it shouldn't happen to often though.

Well it could be a lot of things. when your hard drive makes that sound does running applications seem slower?

Basically on your system you have both physical memory (ram) and virtual memory (created from spaces in your HD), when you run low on ram, your system start using virtual memory, and transfer information from your ram onto your hard drive, and when your ram frees up the system transfer HD memory back onto ram. Basically if this happens alot your HD thrashes and its pretty bad.

This should only happen if your using a boat load of applications for way longer than average duration. I dont know if this is what you have though since you have 2gb of ram.

Yes i have 2GB of RAM but it shows 50-60% of the time so i dont think it is thrashing..

Alright, i have found that it is my laptop cooler, not my hard drive, PHEW

Thank you guys for helping me, at least now i know what thrashing means :D

I just received my xps m1530 and it does the same thing - the ticking sound, but it does it quite often and it is quite annoying.

It comes from the HDD region but from what I know it can be also the cooler.

Same question here: is it normal?
