A Dell agent told me that hibernation and sleep are not recommended as they tend to make computer crash. There's no solution to this problem yet; the only way to prevent crashing is to turn off everything that relates to hibernation and sleep. They said they had to send a customer with that problem a new comp. I overlooked at it at the time when the agent said this is a Vista problem and is being research now. Now that I think about it, if this is true, it's not worth my money; I will have to return it and go back to XP. If I don't use hibernation or sleep, will the monitor wear down faster?

Besides that problem, the boot up time depends on the mood of the laptop - rarely fast, most of the time slow. This is a brand new computer I'm talking about; 4GB RAM, T9300 @2.50GHz. I tested it by only install 1 program (i.e. firefox), it slows startup time right away. Wth? Even my XP with much lower RAM & processor loads faster.

If anyone uses firefox, does your bottom scroll pad work? For some reason, it only works in IE. Maybe it's a firefox problem?

Heat problem? I can tolerate it but this is a new laptop and I'm already getting frustrated. I don't want $2000 laptop to crash on me after the warranty is over.

Anyone happy with their XPS M1530? How long have you had it?

Lulz, bottom scroll does not work in firefox, maybe its a firefox problem?
boot time is fairly quick on mine... and no ,i have never experimented a computer crash with hibernating/sleeping..

I have though, experienced vista crashes due to the wireless drivers...
    but thats about it...

Yes i am happy with my 1530.
    <3 it.
but i'll sell it soon, and buy a bigger one for gaming...

but im sure as heck i'd recommend the xps m1530 to ANYONE :D i just love it.

Hmm, the warning about hibernation/sleep really is interesting esp. for a system that is meant to be mobile.

About the touchpad scroll issue-Yes, I use Firefox and experience the same problems with horizontal scroll-it simply doesn't work. I would give my right arm for a proper Synaptics touchpad, but alas, I got stuck with the Alps...

btw its funny how dell guys tell us not to use things dell pc's are equipped to do xD...

its like... someone who sells pencils tells you; "plz dont sharpen the pencil, it might break the tip".

LOL! I just tested, and my bottom horizontal scroll doesn't work in firefox. I never needed it as I never have one pop up on my wuxga. No problem here with sleep mode, and I have ~20sec startup and shutdown.

Oh great....My comp restarts every time I close the lid, but it didn't do this before today. I don't know *** happened.

EDIT: I tried it a few more times and it crashes every time. And the wireless doesn't work unless I properly restart.
EDIT2: Uh and now when I hit shut down, the computer restarts. What the heck?

I had the same issue and posted about it a few days ago and after some research here and elsewhere I discovered that it was likely the crappy Dell draft N wireless card. In anycase if I went into device manager and open the wireless card and then unchecked the box 'allow the computer to turn off this computer to save power' the sleep crash went away, likewise if I turned off the card manually on the side of the comp, also problem went away. I called them, and (this was of course the second call the first one told me that sleep and hibernate should be turned off, haha) they agreed to send me a new (they said new and of course it turned out to be refurb) Intel draft N card. I installed it and the right drivers and so far no sleep crashes. I am definitely not a computer savvy person and it was easy to do, I will do some more testing but it might have solved the problem.

    good luck!!!

sleep and hibernate just don't work, are they crazy...

Start up time depends a lot on HDD speed, whats the speed of yours? If its 5400 then upgrade to a 7200RPM

Fool around with the power settings, something may have gotten changed. This happened to me a few days ago and that fixed it.

I bought an M1530 in June, and it will not shut down or hibernate without rebooting again. I have tried to resolve this issue with Dell, but it still has the problem. I replaced MB, RAM, Heatsink, and even sent it back to the depot to do what is necessary. I got it back after two weeks, and it still has the problem. What I have noticed is that it only does this when connected to AC power. When on battery, it shuts down and also hibernates. I am a Dell technician, and this has me stumped. Anyone else have this problem?

Very strange. I have had my M1530 for 4 months. I use sleep mode very often instead of shutting it down. I only reboot it once a week to clean the RAM. The computer is in sleepmode average 10h a day and i sleep and wake it up to 10 times a day. Believe me or not: during that time i haven't had a single crash or problem with sleep mode. Just works perfectly.

I have exactly the same issue.. The laptop is bought at about the same time of the year, maybe a bit earlier..
What I do then is just holding down the "power button" after it restarts until it shuts down, so that it keeps its "hibernation state".. Not exactly fixing the problem, I know..

I only place mines on Hibernate and no problems. I only use 'Sleep' when it's plugged in.
