As topic said, I need to know about your guys' opinions on the classic XPS keyboard bump problem before I proceed to take the notebook apart. Is this level of bump perfectly acceptable or is it simply not possible to have a 180° flat keyboard for the XPS line?

I think the first and last pictures demonstrates the situation perfectly. Notice that the keyboard starts to gently slope from the F5 key onwards until the F12. Also note that the black control stripe is also raised as the result.

    Thanks in advance!

I had the same sh!t happen to me when I first got mine. I called Dell support immediately and said this is not acceptable and they had a local tech came by to replace it. This is a common problem with the XPS M1530/M1330. It is common that a cable underneath the keyboard is twisted, hence, causing the bulge.

How was your level of bending: was it as bad as mine or worse? And did he come to replace the whole laptop or just the keyboard?

My keyboard bump looked very similar to yours. If you run your fingers over the keyboard from one side to the other, you can actually feel it. Also the black area above the keyboard (near Power button) was bulging up as well.

When the tech came, he also brought a brand new keyboard. He basically unscrew some bolts on the top and took out the keyboard, snug the wires undearneath, and replaced the keyboard. Easy 10min job.

Your response is very much appreciated. One question, will it be possible to send the technician to my workplace? I don't like taking leaves for nothing. :D

When I talked to the representative at Dell, they asked "are you living at _____? If so, will you be available there at _____?" I am very sure they will go to any address you tell them. Got more questions? Ask away. :)

In the event he can't come to my workplace, is it possible to set an appointment date in the evening or in Saturday (the latter which I doubt)?

Hi there, I'm having the same problem. Local tech guy from Dell came to replace my optical drive today, and apparently he kind of messed up when reassembling the laptop because I also got that bump now... doesn't that suck.

I had the same problem when I got my XPS m1530 today.. It was so bad it was the first thing i noticed when I opened it.. I called Dell and after an hour on the phone, they are sending a local tech guy over to replace the keyboard.. I was so disappointed. It was such a beautiful laptop, Ive been so excited to get it. and now. I have to look at this until its fixed..
But they are fixing it for free. oh well..

Alot of peep's had this *bump* when the 1530 was first released...now it doesn't seem to be such a *common* issue anymore. It's too bad you had to have this happen.

Are they dispatching a Tech for w/in the next few days? Usually turn around time is w/in 48 hours.

Soon, it will be fixed for you so you don't have to look at the bump, anymore!

    Cin ;) :)

I purchased the 1530 only a few weeks ago and have noticed the same problem with the keyboard bulge. Instead of calling dell and having them come fix this problem, possibly messing something else up, getting off work, etc. Could i fix this myself without voiding the warranty?

I didn't notice that I had the keyboard bump until a problem developed where pressing certain keys that lay along the bump were being interpreted as multiple different keystrokes. I contacted Dell and they suggested I update the BIOS??? I am pretty sure the BIOS has nothing to do with it, as pushing down on the bump brings back normal functionality, I am still waiting for a reply as to whether removing the keyboard and checking beneath it would invalidate my warranty.

I suffered from the infamous keyboard bump, the cause in my case was the power cable that runs up to the screen does not lie flush with the chasis behind the keyboard. As the cable heats up it scrambles my keys. I solved this problem by removing the keyboard (following the instructions I got from the Dell website) and placing a sheet of teflon (0.3 mm thick) over the power cable, extending the length of the keyboard. I know not everyone has sheets of teflon lying around etc. but something that is insulatory and analagous to teflon would work.

I had the same problem but I fixed it.

    It can have two reasons.

    first:
one screw is too long - a shorter screw supposed to be there..It is the screw from the bottom - going throught the base - below battery

second: the cables under the keyboard are not in the correct position..

    both can be quickly fixed...

it is up to u , if u will call technitian or fix it by yourself

    goog luck
