What simple stuff do you guys do to maintain your XPS M1530?
Do you continue to use the film of paper your XPS originally came with to protect your monitor?
How do you clean the top of the lid when your machine is closed so you can remove fingerprint/smudges?
Other?
-
Your still using the protective plastic???You really should take that off...you may see the screen a bit better
Also, cleaning the screen, I use the microfiber cloth that came with it, (and yes, I know most peep's that have been ordering as of late ~ are not getting the accessories they should've)*That's a separate topic!!!!*
Anyways, to stay on topic....a microfiber cloth works well on the screen, and I also use a *slighty damp* microfiber cloth to clean the lid..*very gently*
Bed, Bath & Beyond has these marvelous microfiber cloths...They work well!
I am also just really careful with my 1530..for fingerprints (they can't be avoided, really), and no food on or near the lappy & and very very careful with beverages!
Hope that helps!

make sure you clean your fan / exhaust area and heat sink!!!
quick trip to a target for a cheap can of compressed air. -
how do you clean your fan/exhaust area?
and I dont still use the plastic that came with the system, as a matter of fact I dont think there is a plastic on my monitor. im talking about that thin film of paper they put between the keyboard and monitor to prevent scratches, etc. -
....
I don't use that film of paper anymore..didn't after I rec'd my lappy.
Your choice if you want to continue to use it or not!
I'm just really careful with my 1530...and that's the easiest way for me to protect my lappy

cool. how do you store your AC Power Adapter?
-
I just wrap the cords around it like it was designed and fasten the rubber strap and then it goes in my laptop backpack. It is just an AC adapter. Nothing special required. I haven't gotten my XPS yet but I have had my Inspiron with glossy screen for a few years and I don't do anything special with it and am not particularly careful with it and I haven't had any problems. Luckily at work we have wet lens cleaning towlets so I always use those to clean the screen and case. Anything made of cloth with a little windex, water on it I would think should be fine. Just don't use paper products like paper towel etc.

lol yea, but what do you do with that other cord that you plug into the adapter and the power outlet? Do you remove that or do you keep cord attached to the power adapter (but disconnected from the power outlet of course).
-
Matte cover cleaning: Firm rubbing with a (in my case, the one that came with my XPS) microfiber cloth, and a mist of water, maybe a little more than a mist.
Screen: Some water and a microfiber cloth.
Keyboard: Microfiber cloth and water
Palmrest: See keyboard
Fan/Exhaust: Take off CPU Heatsink cover on bottom, blow out heatsink/exhaust with air compressor (Not too heavy as the high pressure -can- and -will- bend heatsink fins)
Rest: Air compressor (canned air will work) -
did u guys remove that thin plastic strip on top of your media buttons/power button? mine's still there.
and once again, do u guys keep the part of the adapter that connects to the power outlet in the adapter, or do u remove that cable and store it separately from the adapter? -
I keep both in and wrap it around the adapter like it's supposed to. -
I keep the adapter and everything *attached* to one another. When taking *remote* from home..I simply wrap the cable around the *brick* and attach it to the rubber strap, snap in place and I'm *good to go*
Hope that helps

I've been using a Staples screen cleaner, lightly sprayed on soft cloth. Any dangers in that?
-
Thats, only my opinion though...you will get lot's of responses on what's the *best*
Cin. -
Microfiber is definitely the best but as long as it is a soft clotch I don't think it is going to do any damage.

I always figured I would make an IT guy cringe but I have been using an air compressor on my desktop for a long time and have never had a problem. I just make sure I keep some distance between the nozzle and the computer.
-
The problem with an air compressor is not so much the high pressure, but.......
Compressed air = water.
If you spray your PC with air from an air compressor, you're spraying it with water as well. -
This is a great thread. I'm really learning some new things.
I know this sounds stupid, but I just want to clarify. By compressed air you mean something like the "Dustblaster Pro"? If you can't use that, how do you clean stuff that falls between the keys? I have two dogs and as much as I try to watch dust and dog hair, some always gets in there. The only other thing I've used is a soft paint brush, the kind you use to paint water colors or something like that, between the cracks of the keys. -
I thought I remember even with the canned air you can get the propellant into your system if you aren't careful. -
Compressed air...if using..use *gently, managed* *short bursts*.
