Hello, I currently have a XPS M1530 with 4GB of memory. I thought that was the maximum that this machine could support, yet when you go to the dell.com site now, it gives you the option of ordering a system with up to 8GB of memory.

My question is whether or not my machine can handle the 8GB upgrade. I do a lot of VM and programming, and would love to be able to upgrade, but I don't want to waste my money if it's not going to work.

Does anyone have a new XPS M1530? If so, can you see if you're still running the P965 chipset?

Thanks for any help or ideas if anyone has any!

I can't say definitively, however it's the same for the XPS M1730. It was originally stated it could only handle 4GB of RAM, then they started offering it with 6GB, and people on these forums even have 8GB. Also I believe the M1730 uses the P945/965 chipset, so it shouldn't be any different for you =-)

I am certain that there are no M1530 with anything other than a 965-Series chipset. Nonetheless, the 965 is officially supposed to support 8GB, so there's a good chance that given the right BIOS, you'll be able to run 8GB on any M1530... given that you have two 4GB sticks of DDR2...

EDIT: The M1730 also only shipped with a 965 chipset. The M1710 had the 945 chipset.

It's P M965 in the M1530, but yes: All the same and all support 8GB (of SO-DIMM DDR2-667). You may plug in DDR2-800 modules, but they will run at max DDR2-667 speed, since the chipset PM965 doesn't support higher speed.

I just upgraded my 1 1/2 year old m1530 to 8gb RAM with the latest BIOS update. Newegg and Amazon had the lowest prices but sometimes Amazon has free shipping.

Yeah, I have the A12 version of the BIOS, so I'm going to go ahead and upgrade to 8GB and x64 version of Vista. Thanks for your help!
