I'm having trouble using the built in microphone with programs like Steam, Skype, and other online multiplayer games. It worked just fine in Vista, but now the microphone is overly sensitive and cases feedback at every volume level.
I'm using the driver that Windows 7 automatically installed. Anyone have an idea?
Thanks,

Install Vista 64 audio drivers from Dell website.
-
Make sure to install the webcam drivers even if they only have one for Vista 64. Also install related soundcard drivers.
-
If you did a Win 7 install while online it would of installed the webcam drivers, now download audio drivers from SXPS 1645 Win7 and all should be ok.
Using them myself and Skype is working AOK now, before I had very bad audio only on Skype with the default audio drivers and Vista drivers. -
I had to install the drivers from Dell's website for Windows 7 Enterprise x64. There are no drivers on Windows Update, and the one included with Windows only allows simply functionality, and the quality is poor.
-
I installed the Vista 64 bit drivers from Dells website, still no change. To clarify, the microphone is EXTREMELY faint when recording in sound record, but is EXTREMELY overpowered in Steam. The built in steam mic check results in huge amounts of feedback.

To BlackRussian and gah, do you think you could link to these? Can't find them anywhere.

Another update: Recording audio with Audacity sounds absolutely fine and normal.
I'm baffled. -

I have the exact same issue. When I use Skype, the microphone becomes overly sensitive and the other person was getting a lot of feedback from my mic and sometimes my volume was not audible to them. After 1 hour of frustration, I finally figured out. The problem happens becoz both Windows 7 and skype are trying to control your microphone. So to overcome, do the following
Click control panel>Hardware and sound> manage audio devices
Now click recording tab> click your default microphone device>then properties
Then click advanced tab> I changed my sound to CD quality> Make sure both options under exclusive mode is selected. This is important.
Now go back to Skype>Tools>Options>Audio settings> Unselect the Automatically adjust audio settings and keep your volume level low.
Voila .. Now windows will control your microphone and adjust accordingly.
FYI. I use Windows 7 professional. And I did install the Black Russian audio driver suggestion but it didnt fix the problem for me. -

So, only installing the Black russian recommended drive will solve the problem? I hate this issue!

I had the same issue with the mic being extremely faint with Skype. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on an XPSM1530. I tried installing the Vista webcam software for the XPSM1530 which didn't help me.
What fixed the issue for me was downloading and installing the Vista 64bit Sigmatel Audio Driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads page. Here is the link: Drivers and Downloads
Hope this helps!
