Hi, I am looking whether it's possible to upgrade my current 5400rpm drive with a Sata II SSD but do not know if my laptop is Sata II compatible so I can take advantage of the speeds. Here is the information I have gathered so far:

My PC: XPS M1530, Bought June '08
    - Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit
    - Motherboard Model: DELL 0D501F
    - Motherboard Chipset: Intel PM965 (Crestline-PM) + ICH8M
    Current HDD:
    - 250GB 5400rpm WD (Model: WDC WD2500BEVS-75UST0)
    - Drive controller: Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s

    Intel PM965: Mobile Intel® PM965 Express Chipset
    ICH8M pdf: http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/313056.pdf

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Yes PM965 supports full SATA 2 3.0 GB/sec speeds. Back then it was cheaper to use SATA 1 drives, but honestly MOST platter hard drives don't even break PATA speed limits.

I did exactly what you are thinking of doing. I originally purchased the 80 GB Intel SSD that is now in my XPS 1647, for my XPS 1530 about a year and a half ago. I did some tests and discovered that the SSD was roughly 82 times faster in terms of operations/sec and response times than the hard drive it replaced! Not only that, but the SSD noticeably extended my battery life with a nine cell battery.

To directly answer your question, the motherboard in the m1530 has a SATA II controller and you should notice an immense increase in the responsiveness and overall speed of your 1530. It was quite literally like night and day, the difference is THAT noticeable.
