Hello,
Recently my slot DVD Drive - Teac DVW28SLC - on my Dell XPS M1530 has started acting up. Keeps spitting out my CDs/DVDs that do work very well in my other laptop.
Is there a way to figure out if the drive is kaput or should I start with a DVD Cleaner first and then go from there.
Can run the Dell diagnostics test at boot but all those tests keep passing.
Downloaded Dell diagnostics software but it cannot read data CD and hence test cannot proceed beyond the first couple of steps.
Looked at the registry fix also but do not have upper/lower filters.
Please advise.

Hi nkaufman,
I appreciate the steps performed by you to fix the issue. I suggest you to update the BIOS to the lastest version by downloading the file from the following link after punching in the Service Tag:
Support for Home | Dell US
You will need to replace the DVD drive and the media control strip, if the BIOS update fails to fix the issue. -
Bios is already at A12.
Could you please let me know why would I need to replace the media control strip if I'm replacing the drive? -
Hi nkaufman,
Thank you for your reply and for providing an update. The Eject button may get stuck sometimes and this could cause the disks to eject. You may check this by removing the media control strip. -
Thanks for your response.
I think most of my DVDs are spit out but most of my CDs remain in but show as empty.
Will look at the eject button but it looks as if the drive has gone bad.
I'd asked another question in another post - can you please explain the difference between Teac DVW28SLC and Teac DVW28SL drives? Are they the same? -
Hi nkaufman,
Thank you for your reply. Yes, it seems that the drive has gone bad. However, you can try cleaning the lens using a dry lens cleaning disk before replacing the drive. The features of Teac DVW28SLC and Teac DVW28SL are similar and the difference can only be with the firmware.
Please let know if you need further assistance. -
Thanks for your response.
Yes, I think you are right. I should start with trying to clean the lens first. I did try using Air Duster but that might not be the best way to clean.
Since you are from Dell, I was wondering if you could take a look at the following post and let me know the answer:

Thanks again for your help. -
Hi nkaufman,
Thank you for your reply. The part number of the battery populated in our database and it is a genuine battery for XPS M1530. -
I must tell you that I am really impressed with the prompt help that you've provided so far and makes Dell a preferred choice for my next machine (not only mine but also for my friends and relatives). -
Thanks, -
Hi nkaufman,
Thank you for your reply and for providing an update. Some people have used the disk cleaner to clean the lens effectively on slot load drives. You can remove the cover and clean the lens with soft cotton swabs. You can view the following video for guidance:
