Hey folks - great site/forum, very helpful getting my M1530 up & running on Vista x64.

I've had a couple really odd problems that my search fu is not turning up solutions two and was hoping sage minds could assist. I believe I have all the right drivers, haven't had any crahes or other obvious problems except the two below.

First, and I believe this happened after SpeedFan was installed, my fans have failed to kick into high under load twice. The first time was after I installed Speedfan. I couldn't change any settings anyway, so I uninstalled it and my fans didn't kick in. I reinstalled it, and my fans kicked in just fine. I've left it installed for now. The second time my fans didn't kick in was when my laptop got stuck into a reboot-cycle, see below. I can usually fix this by doing a shut-down and unplugging power for 30s, then booting up. My machine ran fine for a couple of weeks at least prior to this coming up.

Second issue seems to be with sleep/hybrid sleep/hibernate not working consistently. Hibernate doesn't work at all, the laptop just reboots. I first noticed this after Vista SP1. I've checked and I have my hiberfil.sys. I did the on/off from the cmd prompt, nothing. Machine reboots everytime I try to hibernate manually or via the timer. Sleep is even more odd. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Usually when I manually try to enter sleep (FN+ key or via the Start/ menu), the laptop looks like it's going to sleep, then it reboots. When I let the machine sleep via the timers, it sleeps fine, usually. Every once in a while it reboots.

On a reboot the HDD trashes unmercifully. By the time I get into perfmon, I notice MS Defender has high read/IO on pagefile.sys (Why my pagefile is as big as it is w/ 4GB RAM I don't grok). After I disable Defender, my machine consistently goes into sleep mode.

    Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem. It seems that disabling some start up programs fix it, try using msconfig to disable all of the start up programs as a test and tell us if it worked for you.

I had this problem with the computer not being able to go into sleep/hibernate when i turned the pagefile off. I turned it back on and my problems went away.

Maybe you should try turning off the pagefile, then turning it back on? Just a thought

Other people here gave the heads up on this problem. I had it too. If you have a Dell wireless, the chances are good that it's the source of your problem. My issues were: would restart after sleep and after shut down.

Tech came today and replaced Dell wireless with an Intel card. Turn off your wireless and see if that does the trick. Then call Dell. They're not even shipping the XPS with Dell cards any more.

I had the problem when I was using the Picture slideshow screen saver. Now that I don't use that screensaver my laptop goes into low power mode.

Alas! I've disabled the Dell WiFi card and hibernated twice without a problem. You might be right msboc!!! Thank you!

It's just so weird that it works sometimes even with the WiFi card turned on and that running some programs seem to affect it.

I'll keep on testing and let you know the outcome.

Also. A tip for all of you with this problem:

Go to Power Settings and modify the advanced settings for your profiles to enable Hybrid Sleep. It will not solve the problem but if your machine reboots it will at least reboot back to the state it was with all your applications running.

Just to add to this: I have the same hibernate/sleep problem. I've used 64 bit Business and 32 bit, both of which suffer from the same problem. I was certain it was the video drivers since I've heard of Nvidia drivers causing this in the past, but after testing I ruled them out and discovered that it was indeed the Dell wireless card.

Temp Solution: flip the switch on the side to turn the wireless card off before sleeping/hibernating (annoying, I know).

An actual solution to this for now seems to be to replace the Dell wifi card with an Intel one. I haven't done this yet, but I'll end up ordering one soon since this is pretty annoying.

I have the same problem with hibernation on my M1530. It has done this since day one, and I have had the MB and MEM replaced by Dell. The last time, I sent it to the depot for a fix, and they replaced the heat-sink. Still had the problem. I just purchased a Seagate 320GB 7200rpm HDD and Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I installed all software and drivers, but it still reboots at hibernation. I am at my wit's end!!! I am a Dell Hardware Technician, and I am stumped. I don't want to call Support if I don't have to. My last choice is to ask for an Intel wireless NIC. I will take some input or criticism if someone would reply.

    Thanks,
    DPrice

There is a solution for this problem.

Chances are you have Dell's Wi-Fi card and not Intel's. If your Wi-Fi card is a Dell then the only thing you need to do is:

    1. Go to your wireless card settings window and choose the energy/power tab
    2. Uncheck all the boxes, i.e. allow the machine to turn off this device. Leave all boxes unchecked
    3. Fixed!

I hope this works for you. It worked perfectly for me. I think I saw the solution in Dell's forums but can't remember exactly where, so, don't thank me, I didn't find it.

I'm going to try this now and see how it works over the next couple few days to weeks.

Would be nice to permanently banish this problem!
