I`ve pretty much decided on getting the M1530. I will be using it in class for univeristy and also as a home computer and some gaming.

A problem i had with an older laptop is it always turned the fan on during normal use (browsing etc..) and in a quiet class it was very loud

I need it to be very quiet for normal use, im fine with a loud fan while gaming ofcourse.,

So far I have used my m1530 mostly plugged in. I point this out because the powersaving mode for an unplugged unit may create less heat, keeping the fan off so I can't give you info for that instance.
However, plugged in...the fan does come on every now and then for short bursts. It's doesn't occur a lot though and this is while doing only normal laptop browsing, no multi-tasking. The fan is not as loud as some notebooks I've owned but in a quiet classroom environment, it could still be distracting.

Mine rarely comes on too and is silent. In fact the entire laptop is right down to the slot loading drive. I'm rather lucky I guess.

More like 4 or 5 seconds.. But that would just being doing simple tasks like surfing the web. My first one was really quiet but my second seems awful noisy even when it's not really doing anything.

Right now surfing the web I can't hear my laptop at all. When it does come on it isn't for very long and isn't obtrusive at all.

there is a high pitch noise which can be very anoying if you are going to use it in very quiet places...the fan is no issue...

I don't even hear the fan on my 1530. I have to put my ear near it to hear it spin. I'm wondering if possibly some fans are noisier than others, or if using SSD instead of HDD reduces the heat so much that the fan runs slower and at lower revs. My guess would be the latter.
