I've been thinking to buy XPS M1530 for about a month now, but reading these forums makes me think twice. I know people come here to post about issues and get help but issues with grainy screens and other things seems to be very common. Especially since I've seen people post that they bought one and then when it arrives they post that they got a grainy screen several times. It surely isn't a defect. It sounds like Dell is using these screens on purpose knowing they are not good. I also heard that Dell re-uses screens on new returned machines in other machines... so if lots of people are retuning 'bad' screens is it increasing the chance of others getting those screens later?
XPS isn't a cheap machine. At least for me it would be a huge purchase. So, I'd expect a very good screen above almost anything else for this laptop. Other than parts that do not work at all there is not much I can think of that's worse than a bad screen.
Are my concerns unfounded? Am I just over-sensitive from reading all the complaints? Or is there really an issue with 1530 screens, specifically 1600x1050?
I've seen other people with the same concerns. Do people still strongly recommend the 1530?

Dell does not re-use an old used screen on a new laptop. That is not only false but illegal for them to do.
If you request a screen replacement, it will most likely be a screen from a screen replacement prior. This can be done because in the warranty it states that replacement parts can be either new or refurbished parts.
If, however, for any reason you are dissatisfied with your laptop, you can return it for a full refund with in the first 3 weeks of owning it. Therefore you shouldn't have any reason to be sitting in the fence. Give it a shot, if you love it, keep it, if you don't sent it back and get a different computer. -

At this point (after only a few hours with it), I'm not too impressed with the M1530. I think the screen is pretty good, however I did get the Samsung and am going to have it changed to an LG, because the LG sounds better. I think the notebook is too bulky for a high end 15.4". I had an HP 15.4 previously that seemed much smaller and lighter, yet with the same size screen. I don't care that much about the weight, but it seems too heavy, too. I don't find the keyboard to be very good and I don't like the touchpad either. All that being said, I am planning on keeping it. It's still better than the 1520 I just returned, it's smoking fast and it looks cool, which is the most important thing (joking). I'm not sure if I would actually buy it again, but there's nothing out there and I need to downsize from the 17" I have because of all the travel I'm doing.

Perhaps you should fill out the "What Should I Buy?" FAQ and post it in the "What Should I Buy" forum. That will give the big heads of NBR a chance to see if they can't find another notebook you might like to match your wants and needs. -Niki

I am very satisfied with my Dell XPS M1530 even though I will have to replace the mothercard to get rid of the static (will see if it works for me..)
-
Static?
What's up? -
One of the great things about Internet forums is the abundant exchange of information. The downside is that a small minority of owners (what percentage of Dell owners post here? a fraction) can make issues seem more common than they probably are.
-
E.g. static? And the lid not cooperating well with stanby?
Mmm, I thought it must have been a minor issue, or there have been a revolution...
XPS M1530 or not?
