I recently downloaded and installed speedfan to track the temperature of my computer. And even when my computer is idling it seems to run hot. these are my readings. (ps my computer is brand new)
GPU: 65-70 degrees celcius
core 1 and core 2: 50-55
this is just idling. when i start to play games I bet it will get much much hotter. What should I do?

Your temps look pretty normal for the XPS M1530 with the Nvidia 8600M GT.
Have a look at this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=273659
Most people seem to have temps around 60-65C.
My laptop's GPU (8700M GT) idles at around 60-65 C too, so it is pretty normal. If you are REALLY paranoid about the temperature of your laptop, I would recommend getting a decent laptop cooler. I'm sure if you search around this forum, there are millions of threads and recommendations on that subject. -
ok, thanks a lot

Speed fan is not the right way to check the temperature, I highly recomend HW monitor and follow this guide:
http://en.community.dell.com/wikis/tutorials/howto-temperature-monitoring-on-xps-m1330-m1530.aspx
And, I think your temperatures actually are 55-60 on the cores, just check with HWmonitor if you see any diference.
Also those temps are OK, but you can get even lowers temp if you undervolt the CPU and apply thermal paste to the CPU.
For example I was running at 60C to 70 C on the CPU and after undervolting+thermal paste my temps went down 20C!!
now I'm on 40C to 50C on idle but I didn't tried on gaming because i need to cure the thermal paste.
If you are doing some gaming I think undervolting and thermal paste is a MUST.
Like americans says: My 2 cents. -
I purchased the same laptop on 2/21/09. I have the exact same issue as you do. The temps are read (and fixed) with HW monitor. My temps are the same as yours. I personally think that it is running quite hot, just to be surfing the internet. I just got off a chat with a dell person. after going through the have you updated bios/video drivers... here is what was said...
----------------------
ME: ..... I have read on a few forums that NVIDIA had a problem with there chips, which was causing them to not last as long as they should. The xps m1530 has one of the chips that were affected. Would dell support/replace it if it ever died?
here is a link to a blog.. http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/...nvidia-gpu-update-for-dell-laptop-owners.aspx
AGENT: yes we are aware of that and we do apologize for this, but if the video update will not fix the issue we can replace parts here or replace the whole system since it is still in 21 day return period.....
......
ME: so is 60-70C for the gpu not really under any stress (gaming/graphic intensive) a normal temp for this laptop?
AGENT: no its not
.....
----------------------------------------
He was talking about a system replacement and replacing parts because HE said it wasn't a normal temp. So is this the average temp for this laptop with the T8300 cpu and NVIDIA chip from the users of this fourm?!?
