My XPS M1530 seems to be running very hot these days, even when just doing basic web surfing. The top of the laptop is very warm and the bottom burns your hand.

I've used CPUID hardware monitor this evening and the CPU temperature tends to be around 70 and the GPU 80. However, the CPU has peaked at 101 and the GPU at 96.

Is this a normal temperature range? Should I be contacting Dell support? Nothing has gone wrong on the laptop yet, but I do have it still under an extended warranty.

    thanks

This is definitely not normal; my m1530 idles at around 55 with the cpu never exceeding 75 and the GPU staying under 90 while gaming. I would try cleaning out the fan assembly and reapplying the thermal paste for the CPU and GPU. Also, you should check to make sure that the heatpipe is still in full contact with the components (i.e. nothing on the retention system has popped off allowing a gap to form between the heatpipe and the component)

OK thanks, that seems to be the concensus from other sites. I couldn't see any problems after opening it up, but I have taken the heatsink off, cleaned off the old thermal paste and put new stuff on CPU & GPU. I blew as much dust out the fan as I could as I didn't have a small enough screwdriver to open the fan enclosure.

Have restarted and it is idling at 46 CPU and 58 GPU. The fan rarely needs to come on at all now - the difference is amazing!

    thanks
