Greetings, I recently took the plunge and purchased a new Studio XPS 16. I searched online to find images comparing the size difference between the two without any luck. Now that I have both systems in my posession, I took a few quick shots for any interested in seeing the physical difference. You'll have to forgive the fingerprints as I didn't bother to wipe either down.

With the configurations I have, the weights are 5.8lbs for the M1530 and 6.6lbs for the XPS 16.

Nice photos and info. Thanks for posting as I'm sure there are some 1530 owners out there contemplating an upgrade.

Disappointing that it's nearly a pound heavier :(

It's way more compact though, open one of Dell's older systems and compare to the XPS 16, the XPS 16 is seriously packed. There's hardly any free space or space between components.

The weight difference really isn't so bad. What I find is that the size is somewhat awkward compared the m1530. The 16 is longer width wise but slightly shorter in depth. It certainly takes some getting use to as compared to the more squarish shape of the m1530.
When holding the two, I feel like the m1530 is more sturdy. I actually have to call up dell because I do not like that the battery on my 16 is slightly loose. It has a bit of play which I would rather it didn't.

I think they're all like that actually. The battery wiggle. Bugs me too.. Is there a fix?

So does that mean the 16 has more parts... or is thinner or what? Bigger parts?

Thank you!! I was looking for pictures like this too, could you please add your XPS 16 specifications for comparison purpose? What do you think about both? Do you like more or less the XPS 16 than M1530?

    Thanks!

You're welcome. I am glad they are helpful. Here are my 16 system specs:

    P8800 2.6ghz/1066mhz
    4gb ddr3 Ram
    1080p FHD WLED
    4X blue-ray burner
    sound blaster x-fi
    360gb 72k hd
    Intel 5300 wireless n
    ATI 4670

I opted for this sytem over the I7 because I got a great deal and it is more than I need already. I also got the 3yr warranty + complete care, all for $1285.

Right now, I am digging the 16. It's much faster than my m1530 especially when it comes to games. The video card kills the 8600gt. Don't get me wrong, I love my m1530 but the technology is a bit dated compared to the 16. I also love the WLED screen and how bright and crisp it is. My m1530 screen wasn't bad, in fact I was one of the lucky ones that got one of the LG screens back in the day.

The one thing I am adjusting to is the size difference, I do notice the bit of extra weight on the 16 but it is bearable. It feels a little chunky in comparison. I also notice a little bit more keyboard flex on the 16 but it is barely noticeable. I often feel like I can throw the m1530 around but I am hesitant about the 16 because it seems somewhat more fragile, perhaps it is all the shiny plastic. :)

Some people seem to be complaining a bit about the heat but I have to say that this thing runs much cooler than my m1530, granted it could probably use some new thermal paste. The temeratures are tolerable and expected with such components packed into the 16. The heat seems to be concentrated near the front by the touch pad whereas my m1530 radiates heat big time from the front, on the palm rest and from the left side. I will still need more time to get a feel for the 16 and prolonged gaming though.

Can you add another set of pictures with them open, just to see any differences that way? Thanks in advance ...

Thanks for your detailed response "Illegal Operation", I have been playing with the idea of upgrading my M1530 but I'm still hesitant (mine is very similar to yours even with LG screen but with black lid and upgraded hard drive).

I must say you got an excellent price on XPS16! Good luck with your new toy :D

Here are the new images so you can get a feel for the screen size etc. Both laptops are set to max brightness. The 16 looks a little washed out but that is because it gets so much brighter than my m1530. For me, it is an overkill to go that high but I guess it is nice to have the option. Overall, they both have really great images with good viewing angles.

Do you have the 1080P screen? What do you think of it? Does the text get too small for a 15 inch monitor? I have a 17 inch at 1080P and I am not sure if I would want to go smaller than that with 1080P. How does the 15 inch handle 1080P? I was thinking of getting the 900P with a 15 incher ... thoughts?

I wondered the same thing as you about the screen size. My 1530 actually has a 900p and I can't imagine going any higher in res on that size screen. I have excellent vision and I have the 1080p on the 16 but even that is tiring on the eyes after a while. luckily you can scale things up and zoom in pretty nicely if you need to. For watching videos and playing games it is fine but for lots of reading, it is way too small. Really the only reason I went with the 1080 on the 16 is because I play blue-rays on the laptop and I wanted to take full advantage of that.

Yea, I only have the 6-cell. When I got my 1530 I got the 9-cell in addition to the 6 but I seem to always have access to electricity so I have never even used it. I figured it wouldn't get much use on the 1640 either so I didn't bother.
If things change, I guess I will get one after the fact.

Prefect feedback! I was thinking of going 900P with the SXPS 16 ... it seems Dell has removed that option though ... so it seems I may be going with an I7 Studio 15 instead ... to bad the Studio does not have a SSD option or it would be perfect. I also notice the SXPS 16 has gone up in price quite a bit (upped the RAM some too).

Anyway ... thanks for the feedback!
