I asked this on one of the other sub-forums here but no-one answered, and as it's specifically related to a DELL laptop I thought I might have more luck here ;)

I currently own a DELL Inspiron 8100 and one of the things that really annoys me about it is that the hard drive and the optical drive are on the same Primary IDE channel (HD as master and OD as slave), which is a bad thing. The bay used for the floppy drive is on the Secondary IDE channel.

I'm looking to get an XPS M1710 and was wondering whether it suffered from the same "problem". Can someone with an XPS M1710 please run Nero InfoTool and post a screenshot of the Configuration tab.

    Thanks in advance!

sorry don't have that model, but I'm pretty sure this model will come with a SATA interface. There is only one drive on a SATA channel, no more master/slave business.

Crypto - Good point about SATA only having one device per channel.

Msyvc - Thanks. I'm definitely going for the M1710 :) BTW, did you fit the NEC DVD drive yourself, or did it come as standard with the M1710 ?

Mine was standard, but I bought it last May. Hopefully Dell Config or Checkout would show you specifically what model you were getting.
