    Hi
I have just received my XPS M1710 and when listening to a mucic CD it sounds like it is "jumping" throughout the playing of the CD. I have tried several CD's and the same thing is happening throughout all of them.

After inserting the CD into the drive, there is initially a high pitch "reving" noise and the whole laptop is vibrating.

Has anyone else come across the same problem?

    Many regards,
    PC

Have you tried using another media playing program? What about when you use MediaDirect?

If you get the problem with only a specific program, you know it's not the drive's fault.

Just tried using the Media Direct. Still the CD is jumping in some places. Also I must say the sound coming from the speakers sounds very boxy and cheap. There doesn’t seem to be any subwoofer sound

If you are sure that the CD isn't scratched up heavily, and that the problem isn't a software issue, then it looks like a hardware issue. Contact Dell to see if you can replace your optical drive.

Contacted the Dell technician and they are sending out someone to replace the drive. I must say the service I received was of outstanding quality.

So it is the sound card or the cd player?

    Not too sure mtor

When using the Media Direct function without powering up Windows it seems to work fine.
But when using the applications via windows the problems occur.
I will ask the technician when he arrives Monday morning to replace the drive

    Cheers

The noise you describe does not sound normal for the optical drive, although in a notebook computer it will be a bit more obvious (less there to muffle the sound than on a desktop). Replacing the drive should fix that part of the problem.

For the skipping, I think it may be software related, especially if it does not happen when running Media Direct outside of Windows. My first though is how much memory does the computer have? My second is, what programs are active when you are having the problem? Please let me know whether the problem is still there after the drive is replaced. If it is, I will be happy to help in any way I can to get the problem fixed.
