I rec'd My M1710 today. When I opened the box, I dont see what i would generaly think of as a MS install CD of Windows XP Pro. Not a system restore CD, but a full install CD of Windows XP Pro.

What I do have is a Green & White CD that reads "Operating System" "Already Installed On Your Computer" "Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP2"

Is this a full install or is it a restore disk?

Also... My COA looks like a piece of paper that could be pealed off easily. Is this normal for this system or normal now? It even has holes in it!

That hole is a new "anti-piracy" feature...I think it only saves about $0.01 in paper costs.

The reinstall disk is just XP pro, not the restore disk. It doesn't contain any drivers or bloatware. You'll have to get them off of the dell site. (The drivers, not the junkware :) )

It's an OEM cd, not the retail version. Thats why it's so cheap.

Please check out the XP Format Guide before formatting which is stickied at the top of our Dell forum (link in signature also). Users generally skip reading it and then make several mistakes and have problems.

I did read several threads on several forums on redoing the machine over the last few days. Before I rec'd the machine so i would know what the intricacies of this machine where prior to doing it. inturn when i redid it i left a 1.3 gig partition of unformated space so that when my mediadirect CD comes in i will be able to install MD3.

None of the guids said what the full XP install CD looked like. I wanted to make sure that what i was using was indeed what i wanted, and not a restore disk.

Thanks to all for the help, took me less than 1.2 hrs to get it all done. start to finish, including downloading all the drivers.
