Ok this has me confused and happened recently, all was well with my laptop but after installing Motorola Phone Tools so I could administer my KRAZR K1 I noticed a problem.
My wireless adapter stopped automatically connecting to my network, initially saying the shared key didn't match, ok I logged into my router on another PC remade the wireless set up set new key closed and restarted the router.
The laptop still refused to connect, yes I edited the profile to reflect the shared key change, I then temporarily made the connection unencrypted, the laptop connected fine.
Reinstated the encryption and the laptop pro set software reported "Problem Applying Profile" when trying to connect.
I then uninstalled the Motorola software, cleaned up the uninstall with CCleaner, updated the Intel Pro driver, removed the device from the system and allowed Windows to redetect and reinstall it.
I tested the login profile using Windows to manage the wireless connection and it logged on without problems now here is the wierd part.
If I boot the laptop and find the wireless indicator is yellow, try to connect - get "Problem Applying Profile", delete profile and re-enter key = "Problem Applying Profile".
Remove the wireless adapter in device manager and reboot, wireless connects using the profile without a problem. Reboot the laptop and it will not connect?
Anyone got any idea about why the profile can be good after redetecting hardware but not on normal restarts?

Wow 40 views and no ideas
I guess this is a real problem heheheh.
Only advice I have seen in my research is to use Windows to manage it and that's working without issues.
I have downloaded the Intel Pro Set software as it didn't want to decompress from the CD ?, I tried a reinstall but the profile still wouldn't take on a reboot, wierd.
I'll reinstall the Motorola software cos I suspect that will play nice with Windows but we will see. -
Problem solved, it seems that the Pro Set software can get the jitters if it starts looking for an access point and one is not there.
Solution, ensure wireless access point is started prior to enabling Wi-Fi on the laptop. -
Could you be a little more elaborate on how you solved the problem? Thanks.. Am suffering from the same problem and cant seem to find a solution..
