Hey there Consi... Sorry for not getting back to your PM sooner - been a bit busy with a bricked phone - LOL.

So, I8Kfancrap errrr I mean GUI. The simple answer is NO. I would NOT use this on any system not listed in the creator's compatibility notes ( http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/). The thing is old - and is not being worked on. Its dead software and using it you are risking a dead GPU.

If you are worried about thermals - just take a nice blast of compressed air to your M1710. Be sure to insert a paper clip in between the fan blades to prevent them from spinning at an unsafe RPM as you air blast it.

Also, you may want to look into the laptopvideo2go 185.66 or 185.68 drivers. These provide very cool thermals and are top notch. You can also cool your lappie by raising up the back of it - prop it up with a CD Wallet. Always worked for me when I had my M1710.

It works fine up until the Vostro 1500 era but not with XPS models at all

Yeah - the problem as I recall is the app just doesn't interpret the data from the GPU correctly thus the fan isn't running at the proper time / proper RPM... at leas tthat is what I remember reading somewhere.

Well if I8kfanqui doesn’t works fine with XPS M1710 how to explain this situation : today I played Fable with and with out I8xxxx .
    Here is the results :
Interesting , and if the temps are fine why don’t use I8 to this laptop ?

Haha! I use i8kfangui on my M1710! Just on passive mode to tell me the temps. I'd never use it to control the fans!

I think its pretty useful anyway!

instead of letting the BIOS take care of when(and how fast) to turn the fan, you can let i8k turn on the fan through trigger (eg: above xx temp for GPU, turn it on)

that saying, i'd leave the fan turning thing to the bios... my m1330's fan can be toggled by i8k, but see no reason to mess around with the fan

@Cin', seeing that i8kfan doesn't control the fans for m1530, it's just a monitoring tool, like HWMonitor...

The reason people tend to use i8kfanGUI is because the BIOS isn't configured properly (at least on a M1710 it isn't). For example on my M1710, the fans only start to spin at low speed when my GPU reaches 86 degrees celsius. Okay, that's a temperature the card CAN handle, but it will certainly decrease its lifespan by a couple of years if it always gets that hot.

Yes, I know that, paper_wastage..thank you for pointing that out...I failed to extend on my sentence  :) I used it when my lappy was overheating. And, then I found the awesome delight of using Everest, and never looked back to using that to monitor my system.................................................

If you try to turn off the fan using i8kfangui, and put your ears in front of the fan, can you hear it trying to run but immediately turn off? I couldn't control my M1330's fan without the BIOS automatically trying to turn on the fan, and the constant fan on/off was a bit bothersome when I expect silence.

Also, I have a feeling that newer laptops past the Inspiron 6000 (not sure when it actually starts since) uses PWM fans, which uses a different form of voltage regulation. I notice that with my desktop's CPU heatsink fan (which uses a 4-pin PWM fan), if I try stopping it, it would turn back on soon. With the older Inspirons, all it took was a signal to control the voltage (which is what I8kfangui is doing) going into the fan and it would stay that way. Although I can't really prove my claims, it would be helpful if owners of old Dell laptops can check inside and see how many wires connect to the fan. Maybe I can conclude something this way. I opened up my M1330 but since I returned it a year ago I don't remember the interior.

tl;dr: i8kfangui more than likely cannot properly control the fans of the newer Dell laptops (I owned an M1330) because the fans used in Dell XPS laptops are PWM.
