The M1710 has a GeForce Go 7950GTX and Truelife glossy WUXGA screen.
The M90 has a QuadroFX 2500M and non-glossy matte WUXGA screen.
Aside from that they're pretty much the same, bar cosmetic differences and a 3 button mouse for the M90.
I assume the benchmarks are roughly the same, and would probably go for the M1710 for some reason, but I'm not sure about the glossy screen.
Any advice from owners of either of these machines would be appreciated ?

The QuadroFX might hurt you in gaming and a glossy screen will be more vibrant in terms of color but will reflect more sunlight.Take a look at the Notebook Screen Guide and a thread comparing the Quadro FX 2500M, Go7900GTX and Go7900GS? located below.

Honestly, if you aren't doing any CAD type stuff and you are planning on gaming go for the M1710. As for the glossy screen, I would just go to the store and see the difference between matte and glossy. So people like one over the other. Personally I much rather have matte, but that is just my taste.

Agreed with above poster, if you dont have a use for a workstation class video card, dont get a workstation class video card, the chips are basically the same (simialr core with a few differences), game compatibilty and performance are usually not. The quadros are made for high quality accurate error free renders, with speed in the back seat, the GF cards are made to spit out as many FPS as they can, with little regard for accuracy or precison.
I was anti glossy for awhile, I was forced into it with my last two laptops, and I like it, very few consumer level notebooks have the the screen brightness to work well outdoors anyway, the sun will wash the image out horribly reflective or not. -
I chose M90 because of its matte screen and more classy look.

Both the m1710 & M90 will be equally as good. I personally think that this is a matter of personal preference bar the need for either a workstation class graphics card or a gaming graphics card as well as either a matte screen or a glossy screen....

I have to disagree with that, if your only intent with the card is gaming, you should always go with a true gaming solution, the games were made for the card and driver set, gaming performance is closer than what it used to be between the two types, but performance is far from identical, and odd conflicts and glitches are'nt uncommon among the workstation cards when playing games. -
Thanks for all the information. I have never had a laptop with a glossy screen, and my initial opinion of them after seeing them in shops is that they are too reflective. What do you think my chances are of getting an M90 with a 7950GTX card ?
XPS M1710 or M90 ?
