Hi, I've had my laptop for about two months now. I bought it from a recondition company - ndc.co.uk. It's been fine up till now. On friday night it was working perfectly, then when I went to turn it on on saturday afternoon it was nothing doing. Two of the lights on the back right (the power one and the one next to it) lit-up for about a second, then they went back off again, and that was it. It's been doing that ever since. The light on the AC power supply is still green, but it won't turn on either on just battery or just supply or both. I didn't download anything the last time I used it, just a bit of footy manager, watched a couple of episodes of simpsons online listened to some stuff on itunes and thats it. Nothing's been spilt on it and I am at a loss to understand why it isn't working.

I doubt its that common a problem - I rang Dell and short of opening it up they didn't really know what to do. I tried taking the battery out and holding down the power button for 10-15 seconds then trying to turn it on again, but it didn't work. If anyone knows anything that can help, please let me know, and save me the journey to the repair shop and the millions of pounds they'll charge me.

    Thanks again guys,

    Adam

Sounds like either a battery problem, or a power supply problem. If you have any other power supply thats the same as the one you use (or know anyone who does), try using theirs, and same goes with the battery.

Basically you need another power supply and/or battery to rule which one it is out. Maybe the repair shop will let you use theirs ans test it out? Can't hurt to ask.

Thanks for your help guys. I'll see if I can't find another power supply and keep my fingers crossed that that's it.
Otherwise, I'll be sending it back to the company. Just a hassle I guess.
    Thanks again,

    Adam

Nobodys ever touched the cpu in mine :(
Thats why i cant understand how its gone, Ive treated it like a baby, Never used it on a surface where it couldnt ventilate, Always on the table :(
So over heat due to carelessness isnt the cause anyway :(
And unless they bent a pin when manufacturing it, Dont see how thats possible either :(

Is there a way we can determine what exactly is gone wrong?

    Thanks for your help.

not saying that one of the pins broke on yours, just that the cpu might have a problem, the result of a bad cpu (for whatever reason) it it will not even boot to bios

Thanks for your help but jeez no need to jump me haha, i got so caught up in reading the information in that link...that i forgot to reply after reading it.........Thanks for the help, i appreciate it, Im going to call them and see, go by what you said :p

Also, There a while ago i pressed the power button and it started to boot, i saw the dell logo and the load screen but then it went off again, so it only ran for maybe 2seconds.

I had been handling it for a few mins before hand, So i got my hopes up that something was loose inside...So i stripped it down and found nothing wrong only that the cpu heatsink grill at the fan was badly clogged with dust....... So its not looking good for the cpu anyway... :(

Ill call them tomorrow and see what they say and i will let you know how i get on :)

I have a dell m1710 and it won't boot to setup or boot menu. It shows the dell logo loading screen, then it goes to a black screen that says 130 watt power adapter required or try to reseat the power adapter plug, I tested the adapter and it puts out 137 watts 19.9 volts and 7 amps, right on the money. I then tried the fn and media direct button to see what would happen, I got the solid 9 lock light and the lock a and down arrow light flash. Someone posted that this means the gpu is bad. I dont know how its possible, I rarely use the laptop, and when I do its in a cold air-conditioned room that is pretty dust free. Leading up to the problem, the power adapter sometimes plugged in would not charge batter, then laptop would not boot with a/c adapter plugged in and had to use batter, then passed out with movie playing and a/c adapter not plugged in. No battery power to boot and laptop does not recognize power adapter.

I have heard that the xps power suppy has 4 wires in the power adapter, one power, one ground, one neutral, and one special wire that lets the laptop know its a genuine dell xps 130 watt power supply. Does this sound accurate? It appears to have 3 prongs going to the power adapter. But the part that plugs into the laptop seems to have only 2 contact points that transfer power. The outside silver round part and the pin inside.

Any help would be very appreciated, I am a college student that has 2 weeks worth of homework and research papers, that are due on Wednesday stuck in this m1710 laptop.

Other than that it worked great till now. My xps desktop gen 4, had so many problems to, power supply ram, motherboard, thank god I got the 4 year extendo warranty on that one, I however have any warranty left on the m1710, only 6 weeks off warranty dell says for $30 an hour they are glad to help.
