I'm about to hit the buy button for my customised Dell XPS M1710, however, I'm wondering if it is worth investing on a 3-year warranty. I've had trouble free service from my 3 year old HP Compaq nx7000, my old 5 year old Toshiba is still running strongly... the last thing I need is the notebook breaking down at an important time.

Granted the price of the M1710 and the huge amount of features (which adds to a higher probability of failure  ), what is the reliability like? Any niggly faults? (e.g. LED not lighting up or one of the fans not working)

Well, I used to own an XPS M170. It was recently replaced with an XPS M1710 though :D . Hmm, where to start with the issues I had. I started out with a faulty video card. That was replaced with a new one. A little while went by and my motherboard failed. Dell replaced the motherboard. Then I had overheating problems, which dell then replaced my video card, heat sinks and fans. Then my motherboard started acting up and was replaced one more time. I still had problems, so they just replaced it with my current m1710. So lets see...
    3 motherboards
    2 video cards
    1 heat sink
    2 fans

A lot can happen in 3 years. I opted for the 3 year accidental care plan, and I couldn't be happier with my decision.

Yes. The 3 year is worth it. Besides they say most of the damage occurs during the first year but things can still break 2 or 3 years down the road. At the very least get accidental damage coverage on it.

If you rely on your notebook it is probably more worth it. If you have it sitting your desk most of the time, I saw the accidental is unwarranted.

With a 3 year warranty, my plan is to keep a laptop a little over 2 years, and then sell it. Having it still under warranty can help you sell it used on craigslist.

Also, all my laptops have gone in for service for things like motherboards, motherboards and video connections to the motherboard.

The warranty seems expensive, but every repair I've had done would have cost far more than the warranty.

It's sad, but unless you are going to keep the laptop 12-18 months... you prolly will need the warranty.

3 year warranty is definitely a good thing. Not only will it give you the peace of mind, but will also help you sell it if you decide to do so before it runs out.
