For the X7900 if I O/C to 3.2ghz - does 70-80 degrees celcius under load sound normal to you guys?

If you're exceeding 70 degrees I'd probably recommend downclocking it a bit. Stick it on 3.0 and see how you do. Anything over 70 isn't gonna be doing the best for you CPU >.<

80*C is high but this is what you will expect from a 65nm 2 generations old CPU. The 45nm X9000 will run slightly lower temperatures at the same speed, despite both having the same TDP. Unfortunately these few days the X9000 is very difficult to get hold from ebay. :(

I assumed from your sig you're currently using a T8300 and have not purchased the X7900? If so, I suggest purchasing AS5/MX2 thermal paste along as well + undervolting for your X7900. That will guarantee to drop you down 10 - 15*C and if done properly you can get down to even 20 - 30*C depending.

Buy a cooler unless if these 2 remedies do very little help.

    Hope this helps.

Hehe the sig is a bit old, my X7900 just arrived on my doorstep today. I've already put it into my computer, applied AS5, and tried OCing. Temps on idle seem okay o_O high 40-low 50s...but during gaming it gets toasty...

Funny thing is I don't seem to see a major difference in temps on the lower clock speeds... o_O maybe its cuz my fans are running full blast now o_O

I'm looking at the undervolting thing, I might give that a try and see what happens.

[EDIT] At 3.4Ghz with the CPU on full load from ORTHOS I'm hitting a maximum of 86 and 87 degrees respectively on the 2 cores. Now I shall try the undervolting and hope for the best :D

Yeah, there is also 200 hour of burn in period for AS5. Afterwards the temp can drop further by 5'c. :)

Hey! How about the temperature when you overlock the X7900 at 3.2G?
Can you play game well and stably when X7900 at 3.2G for more than 1 hour with a cooler?
Will your XPS17300 be very load when your X7900 working at 3.2G?
    Need your reply. I also have a XPS1730, and I do not know should I buy a T9500 or a X7900.

Okay! Just to give you all an update. I've undervolted my CPU, reapplied AS5 and now the CPU @ 3.4ghz runs nice and cool. Although at 100% load for long periods of time still raises the temperatures, but that hardly happens in like 99% of the games I play :D.

So thank you all for your advice and help :D
