Could it be that a dell tech came to your house and didn't connect the SATA?

How can I check that?

Other thing could be that there are problem with IRQs. Is your BIOS recognizing your drive? -

DVD drive in my M1730 is plug and play. I don't think there is any cables or anything related. Its not being recognized in BIOS. It says none. Any idea?

Re-seat the optical drive to rule out the connection. If its still dead, call dell if under warranty and have them dispatch a replacement drive (they will send one out, you replace it and send back your old one).

M1 had a good suggestions as well, check your BIOS boot screen - see if its listed. -

Time to call Dell if re-seating the drive did not work.

I am thinking the same. I barely used my dvd drive and its dead. My condolences to it.

Was this following an upgrade to Win 7? If so, I just posted a thread on an Article which discusses this.
