First Off,
IF YOU ARE UNEASY ABOUT OPENING YOUR LAPTOP, THEN DON'T!
(unless you really just feel like doing it...)
My story is that I recieved my XPS M1730 through Dell under system replacement becaise the Nvidia 7900 in my Inspiron 9400 went out under warranty and dell couldn't replace it. So they sent me a base-line XPS M1730 under system replacment to make up for not being able to keep thier end of the warranty on my Inspiron. My XPS came with T9300, 2GB, Nvidia 8700 single. I did my own upgrades and it now has 3GB and 2x250GB Raid0 configuration.
Well My XPS M1730 came with the gray wing option, and I thought it was boring. I also didn't like how the lights on the lid are only white and they can't be changed like the speakers and mousepad can be. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and thus this tutorial was born.
I hope you all enjoy and if you decide to try this, I wish you the best of luck.
Remember to post pics of your mod job if you try it!!!

looks cool.. not sure how i feel about dell being lit up green but none the less deff a nice looking clean job.. makes me wonder how blue would look
too bad i have a sxps1340 id love for my dell logo to light up

Looks good. Only that somewhat concerns is putting paper there, but the heat generation should never get to where that's a problem I don't think.
-
paper requires 451° F to catch on fire.
PolyCarbonate plastics will melt at around 290° - 300° F.
Polypropylene plastics start to melt around 300° - 320° F.
PVC pipe plastic will melt at 414° F.
I highly doubt that paper would be the cause of a fire... -
Excellent job on the tutorial!

Wow this is totally sick! I am sure I am going to do something like this once I get bored of the red color that I have now. BTW, What was your original wing color?
-
-
Although you could also use the colored filter plastic they use for lighting in photagraphy -
rad. all i have done so far is remove the screws so i can swap out the wings whenever i want without having to take everything completely apart. soon i am painting, or sanding or if i am lucky just using a chemical to remove the shiny stuff. i have an extra bezel so i will start to experiment with that

That's incredibly, amazingly, beautiful. The 1730 needed to come in a TMNT ooze color! Now I'm so excited
I'm totally modding out the exterior of my 1530 when it finally arrives.

Very nice mod, I would do it if I had a XPSM1730
The only thing you could try doing to make it better is put a green diffuser over the back of the LCD. I assume the lights are fed by an additional backlight

I have deleted your other thread, cross/multi posting is NOT allowed on these forums.
Thank you (forum rules) -
This looks really interesting. Next time I do a fan cleanup, I`m totally doing this.
But I might be looking into some multicolored paper for disco effect -
