Hi ALl,
Wondering if you might be able to help me with some of the majoy issues I've been having with the M1730 - seriously wishing I didn't buy this thing, but can't send it back as I bought it in USA dell outlet and brought it to europe.
I'm blue in the face trying to get this PC running properly, and when I got it had to go through over ten hours of ****ing about with stock drivers, laptop video to go drivers, and various other settings to get FPS over 20 in any game - once it's working, it works great, but so many stupid problems.
The specs are :
2.5ghz C2Duo
4gb RAM
200GB 7200rpm HD and 100gb 7200rpm HD not using RAID
2X 8700GT SLI
First problem is input. Keyboard input sometimes lags behind my typing (which is pretty fast), which is a bit annoying - it even happens in notepad, although I can live with it I guess. When gaming, WASD input doesn't seem to have any lag.
The big problem is mouse input - either using the dell touchpad or my Logitech MX518 - even with the MX518 plugged out.
Take for example in an FPS, I'll be strafing left or right using W, while looking about with the mouse - suddenly the mouse will stop responding for a split second, and then start working again, but I'll continue strafing - so it's just the mouses input which stops, not the game slowing down.
This happens in both COD4 and HL2:EP1... Very annoying, as it makes online almost unplayable.
The next problem is similar - in photoshop and illustrator, when I'm zooming in, making multiple selections, panning, when things get a bit processor intensive, everything stops and I get system beep loudly and violently for every scroll - this lasts almost a second, and then it chugs away again.
I've also gotten occassional warnings, something about how "Are you sure you want to do this, adobe bridge only supports Intel Core 2 Duo Processors etc etc" which I have..
The final problem is iTunes doesn't play nice with the laptop, or specifically vistsa. The following is a pasted version of what I said on the apple foruM:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been having terrible problems with iTunes and vista.
I've got the latest version of iTunes, and have tried uninstalling and re-installing, and also deleting my library file and starting anew.
No matter what I do, iTunes will randomly screw up somewhere and crash.
When it stops responding, I can't end the process in task man, nor can I kill the process tree - it just won't go away. Other apps also start crashing once this happens, and won't end.
Sometimes, my PC will just completely lock up - mouse stops moving, everything stops..
These problems only happen when iTunes is running, every other app is perfectly stable.
Interestingly, the same seems to happen once I attach my iPhone and try to sync using a winamp plugin - maybe it uses the AppleMoblieDevice service thing...
Here are a few things I've seen in Event Viewer which might shed some light:
The description for Event ID 0 from source iPod Service cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:

So if anybody has any suggestions I'm all ears. I've contemplated installing XP, but would be a lot of effort, since I have vista set up as I want it now. If I can't get some sort of resolution to these problems I'm probably going to have to sell the laptop and buy an M1530, or better still cross over to the dark side with a MacBookPro!!
Thanks all.

I had a similar problem with an old P4 desktop a couple of years ago - turned out to be the chipset drivers being corrupt but I had to do a full rebuild of the os because when windows installed, the chipset was corrupting other files too.
If you're doing any overclocking (I dont think you are from what you say above), reset back to normal. -
Processor also may have problems and hard drive could also have access problems. Its not always the chipset drivers. OCing it would definitely not be a good thing to do depending on how much you did it. You should be more careful when you buy a laptop in the US and bring it over to Europe. It makes it quite vulnerable if you decide to do risky stuff with it.

PCMService.exe
If you have CCleaner installed (if you dont, install it), choose 'Tools' from the menu on the left, select 'Startup Items' and highlight the PCMService entry. Choose 'Disable' and reboot. This should fix the typing lag effect.
You can also use the RUN command - type MSCONFIG and enter... Select the Startup tab, find the entry titled Cyberlink PowerCinema and uncheck it.
PCMService is a component of MediaDirect. You do not need it. Not sure why, but it can cause a typing delay.
As for your other issues, if I can think of anything else, I'll post.
Hang in there - and you dont want a 1530... keep the beast. Which video drivers are you using??? -
You legend.. PCMService.exe killed - no keyboard lag, and more importantly no mouse lag! All games now properly playable again, and that's the biggest problem fixed. The iTunes one at least I can just ***** about apple for - thanks!!
