Did they offer you the Studio XPS 16? How long have you been waiting? Where are you located?

Hi, I'm new here. I'm glad I found you Dell refugees.
I'm in the U.S. and are having similar problems, It seems like it's an old story.

I have a 3 and a half year old M1700 it has had overheating problems since I bought it. The motherboard, heat sinks, fans, memory, video card, and USB ports have been replaced six times.

I was offered two choices, a new system or a refund (The amount was not discussed).
The system Dell offered was the XPS 16.

They told me I could build it in any configuration I wanted.

    So what I spec'ed was:

    Intel ® Core ™ i7 820QM 1.73GHz (3.06GHz Turbo Mode, 8MB Cache)
    Genuine Windows® 7 Ultimate, 64bit, English
Full HD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP
    8GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
Slot Load Blu-ray Disc (BD) Burner (Writes to DVD/CD/BD)
High Definition Audio 2.0 with SRS Premium Sound
Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module (2.1+EDR)
    ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB
Finally Dell offered a replacement after I threatened legal action, here in the states a dissatisfied owner filed a small claims action with a local kiosk in our mall, instead of filing with Dell corporate, he won the $3000. after now one showed up at court.

I was offered two choices, a new system or a refund (The amount was not discussed).
I was told by a manager that the Alienwear is not being offered at this time.
The system Dell offered was the XPS 16.

My question is, am I shorting myself if I accept this replacement, should I hold their feet to the fire and demand a Alienwear?

I'm in limbo here, and I need advice.

    Jimmy

If you had SLI and play games on it, you are really going to notice and not be happy. That single 4670 just isn't going to hold up to the 8800M SLI. You're going to notice a 25-40% loss in FPS on average.

I am running a GeForce Go 7800 GTX. I'll admit that I'm not that well versed on the tech specs out there now, I've been too busy.

Am I going to see a big improvement with this new configuration? I really only play World of Warcraft on this machine, and that is not a big resource hog at all. However, I still can't crank the video up to the max.

Jimmy: If your machine is that old then almost any new machine is bound to be an improvement. I obviously don't know your specs, but I'd imagine that you'd be getting a very good deal if you get that machine.

The ATI 4670 will be far superior to the GeForce 7800 GTX.

I don't know what processor you had, but the i7 is a fantastic piece of hardware and likely to be an excellent upgrade.

I don't think you have any grounds to demand an Alienware simply because your current hardware specs aren't good enough. They're more than capable of offering a superior non-Alienware machine, which isn't true for those of us here with the 8800M SLI; they've been forced to upgrade us to the Alienware M17X, and with much protest on their part.

Dell are now asking for the original owners details before they will go any further, yet they have already repaired it once with my details as registered when extending the warranty though not satisfactorily (admitting liability?).

I'm hoping it's just a stalling tactic as they probably don't want to replace it as they have admitted to not having the parts to fix it untill January. (though I do believe the part to be out of production)

In short do I have a leg to stand on or am I going to have to accept the substandard repair?

Well Dell have now offered me a full refund (£2500 and change) on my XPS m1730 and have done me a deal on an Alienware m17x, which works out at the same price! They are totally crazy, just offering me a replacement would surely have been eaiser.

I think I'm just gonna go with the deal and be done with this as I don't want to drag this out as long as some of you guys have had to endure, 65+ days is an insane time to have been made to wait.

The only point you might be missing is if you had an extended warranty that you paid for. That's usually not refunded. If old machine + extended warranty = new machine + extended warranty, then by all means do it.

Something tells me that Dell is going to stay out of the gaming laptop line now and leave that void for Alienware to fill. This whole fiasco has to have been such a headache and loss of profit for them.

I have used the new M17x for the entire day and so far i am loving everything except for the mouse(touchpad) it does not seem to jive with my fingers as much. I know this comment is probably for the owner's section, but am happy with laptop so far. Was not happy with customer service until i got this.

Also on a side note, from the time they promised me a replacement(which i never requested - they offered) till today was 3 weeks. My company has gold support so that could have been the difference for some of you.

Could always sell it Wood and then order a M17x... ? Hassle I know but might be a decent route if you aren't to happy with the idea of a Studio.

Apparently the Studio lines are also stuck with the DPC latency issue. Honestly at this point, I almost wish they would've just refunded me and I could have moved on to something else...

Thank you for your help. I'm not trying to be a pig about this, but I did spend alot of money 3 years ago and have had nothing but trouble. I though Dell would be a little more forthcoming with their goodwill and not make us have to FIGHT for recompense on a warranty that was nearly 25% of the actual purchase price. However I will take your advise and settle with them now, mainly because I can play my favorite game on just about any machine...lol. Thanks for your quick response.

Omg!! I hate dell rep now. A dell manager said that he shall put in the request configuratiion that i wanted. Then it did show up but it was canceled. Now, i talked to another rep he change the word that 'he shall" is not a guarantee so i might not have the configuration that i had with the manager. And the chances of not getting that configuration is pretty big. I cannot find that manager's contact info

So my order status just updated (from the last time I had called Dell on Oct 15th, the supposed date of the new cards arrival) tonight, saying they shipped out the K650M. I can't find the actual part of this number anywhere, with the exception of Slammin's post on this thread much earlier, where he identified it as a 9800 something.

Is the K650M a 9800gtx? Is it SLI? Anyone got any ideas what the hell Dell is shipping to me?

I'm sure everyone understands; we're all premium customers here.

If you had the M1700 before I assume you've got a fairly high screen resolution, but if you haven't, you should be able to run WoW at med-high/high settings at 1920x1200 on that card.

Quite how good you can get it with nice framerates, I don't know, but with 8800M GTX SLI I had most of the settings at max the game allows (using the console which has higher limits than the UI), with the exception of real-time shadows and the density of grasses etc. on the ground. Something I look forward to enabling on the 260Ms :D

Good luck with the replacement, and let us know how the process goes :)

Dell was supposed to pick up the m1730 they replaced last Wednesday. No one came by and no one has called me since then. Waiting to see if they will pick it up tomorrow and simply mistook which Wednesday it was.

If they don't I might have something to hook up to my HDTV as a media player....!

    *Update*

It would seem that the letter I posted to Dell has made it's way into their system, and the whole issue has been removed from the Tech guys and Customer Relations and now Corporate are dealing with it, so looks like no refund atm, will know more when I talk to the Corporate guy, but at least I now have a number!

Looks like my PC has finally left the factory in Ireland and is en route to me and is on time according to UPS.

I wonder if Dell has arranged it so they only get picked up once a week or something as part of a cost-cutting measure...

Yay, the automated system FINALLY tells me I'm in the boxing stage. Hopefully nothing will go wrong now. Perhaps all of our M17xs are in the same shipment :D
