Thank you! I have now added my rig to the signature but here it is:
    M17x T9550@2,66 Ghz | 260mGTX SLI | 500x2 Raid 0 HDD | 4 Gb DDR3 1066 | Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium

First a little bit dissapointed over the cpu but it is still an upgrade, compared to the T9300 2,5, so I didn't feel I could argue about it. :)

I'm so angry that I'm not even sure I can write this post.

I got back into the chat and was aggressive/assertive with my positions.

At this point being civil seems like it's being perceived as a weakness.

They're definitely stalling, being manipulative, outright lying to me, wasting my time, offering me substandard support, etc.

Today I was told that I would have to send my laptop into the depot. Despite the fact that I had been authorized for an exchange and then some mysterious person cancelled it. This is the same person who says it must go to the depot. This person who has been unreachable, that no one can contact within dell, that does not contact me after 15+ hours of attempting to reach them.

They're saying there's some problem with my account but when pressed they cannot tell me what it is or why. I basically told them in no uncertain terms that they have failed to live up to the warranty contract. I purchased the warranty and I am not responsible for their communication problems or expected to waste the rest of my life attempting to reach a person who obviously does not want to be reached. If they cannot resolve this problem in a timely manner then provide me arbitration.

I suppose I will waste yet another day tomorrow like I did today. Hopefully my grades won't suffer.

Why don't you send it in to the depot this way they will look at it and find out they need to replace it and it will get done sooner. I had to send mine in after the technician came and it couldn't be repaired so I sent it to the depot they looked at it decided that it couldnt be repaired and then the process started for the exchange.

Hello everyone, let me join the club of 1730 owners that are getting the upgrade.

I've been following this thread since i learned i was getting my new system last week and to be honest this forum just feeds anxiety lol. Makes you start thinking something terrible might happen with your order.

Well today i log on to check my order status, for last week its just said in production but then today i notice the tab that says "view my orders"

now there is says shipped yay! but wich one do i believe? the view orders page that says shipped or the page with all the machine specs that still says in production?

it's a good thing i hope, and hopefuly i won't have the same bad luck with delays and cancelations some of you are having.
I really can't wait for my new machine to come! The specs are awesome and should handle my gaming needs for along time to come. I still can't believe how many of us had faulty 1730's wow. And for a long time i thought it was just mine lol.

I still stand behind dell even after my mishaps with my other machine, after all, if not for great care and support i would not be getting this new killer machine! Go Dell ^^

update already lol, got my purolator tracking number today and its on route through the usa to canada right now and called a lady who said i should have it soon! =)

    current 1730 specs - core 2 extreme 2.8, dual 8800 gtx, 4 gig ram, 17" wuxga,200 gig hd

    m17x specs- quad extreme 2.53, dual 280 gtx, 4 gig 1333 ram, 17" wuxga,
    320 gig hd

    Big upgrade i think =)

My order was placed on the 2nd and now it's on its way to my door as we speak. I don't know what problems some people are having or maybe it really is dependant on the rep you have or maybe the good relationship i've worked up through emails with another lower level rep in the past helped me cause he was the guy i contacted first when my lappy here fried for the 3rd time. He right away bumped my case to the right guy for me. And this guy was super nice and easy to talk to on the phone.
I was really starting to worry that my pc would become a $5000 paperweight with another year left on my warranty still until they suprised me and said i'm getting this. My rep even let my pick wich upgrades i wanted, as long as i kept the price near what i originally paid. The price is still 6 or 700 bucks lower then what i orinially paid, but heck i aint' complaining lol

Once again thanks and big props dell and gl to the rest of you still stuck in this "dell hell" you speak of. I for one will always be a dell customer and will be having a very merry christmas ^^

Well I got an e-mail this morning asking to confirm the specs on the replacement machine, which is the m17x. Not as good as XPS guy, but then I payed 1k less for my m1730. Nothing remarkable, everything was the same as the 1730 except:

    T9500 -> T9600
    8800 GTX SLI -> 260 GTX SLI

Of course the ram (4gig) is a little faster etc.

Just got the order information e-mailed to me while I was writing this post. It's in production now, one week and 5 days after my first call to Dell. I suppose thats better than many people here.

    Hi,
I am just a newbie. I need some suggestions regaring the replacement issue. I was having a trouble with my M1730's GPU i.e 87m SLI. It used to overheat a lot. It reached 78+ idle so I contacted dell and they tried some stuff first but later gave me a replacement with another M1730. Now, I contacted them after 5 months of replacement regarding litlle issue with y keyboard an the tech says that mu account is on hold since of some discrepancies. When I called customer service, they say that its the normal temperature and will not support.
Any suggestions how can I bring them in line?

    Thanks

Well, turns out the reason my additional GPU was overheating is cause there was no fan in the M17x for it. Somehow the tech missed this. A week later, they finally got the part and installed it. NOW hopefully this ordeal is over.

    @sadsoul

ask dell to go screw themselves. how is your accound on hold if your warranty is still valid and your problem is genuine? its not your fault their database is messed up.

tell the guy do something or youll take legal action

And the double-standard saga, including blatant violation of consumer law, continues here in UK. Oh, but we cannot use technicalities against Dell, because that could be interpreted as illegal. Meanwhile, Dell can tramble the law, quite directly. I am dreading the scenario of my machine failing.

    DemolitionManHD,
May I ask about the details of your case? I would like to know in particular about the support level. That is, are you speaking with customer service, technical support, or escalations? Secondly, what's the name of the representative.

    I see.

Well, if they build it according to spec, matching or exceeding yours, and it is brand new, then I guess you have to accept. They've done their part and honoured the warranty agreement.

Your particular machine should be easier to build since you've got the 8700m GT card.

Just press for more information on the actual time table for your system.

you could argue for an extreme processor for your extreme processor, BUT they did overcompensate on the GPU, I would bet if you pushed on the CPU they would downgrade you to the 260 sli instead of the 280 sli you have now which still would be an upgrade on the 8800gtx sli.

If I were you, I would keep the T9600 CPU because they might downgrade you to the 260 SLi cards if you call and change the configuration. It will also definitely delay your production. The GPU is way more expensive to upgrade that the CPU. If you really want a quad core CPU, I would suggest that you get a Q9100 from Ebay. I just bought an OEM and not ES version for $255 on eBay and was able to overclock it to 2.8GHz by simply changing the FSB speed. You can then go ahead and sell your T9600 on eBay for about $250-$275.

If you want to go this route, there is a video on this forum in the Alienware section on how to change the CPU. It took me less than 30 minutes to go through with the process.

The 1730 let you safely and stabley overclock the x9000 to 3.4 ghz by increasing the multiplier. Since the T9600 is not Extreme, it can only be overclocked throught the unreliable and unpredictable increasing of the front side bus frequency. With that you might be able to get the t9600 to 3 or 3.1 GHZ safely. (look around the forum for actual values people have been getting)

Increasing the multiplier in an extreme processor doesn't change much beside the speed and temperature of the cpu, FSB increasing can get you into voltage wierdness city.

That's without getting into a discussion about how this will make the FSB go above the frequence of your RAM (1066)

You should be getting extreme processor for extreme processor. Just because the T9600 has the same base speed doesn't enter into it. the difference in cost between a 260 and a 280 is nothing compared to the difference in cost between an extreme processor and a non-extreme processor. Heck, an x9000 still costs double what a T9600 costs if you look up the price...

I was able to point out specific parts that needed to be replaced with more expensive parts to match my old configuration without getting anything else downgraded, and I don't see why you can't too.

Not true. A new QX9300 will cost you 500$ from HP. A new set of 280MGTX SLI's will run you well over 1,000$, even approaching 1400$, if you can even find them, and then you're not covered by a Dell warranty whereas the CPU is almost guaranteed to never fail (GPU's fail all the time.)

I'd be happy with that config - its a big upgrade even with "just" The t9600.

yea i am very happy if indeed they are sending me duel 280m's. From some of the horror stories on here I don't want to get my hopes up and be disappointed. That is why my first question on build was to verify what gpu that was in the config.

I was getting a little greedy and hoping for the qx9300 as well since i had the extreme proc before.

Hoping for a ship date soon, will tell every1 how it goes. Thanks!!!

Mine stayed that way until it shipped as well. And don't try to call or chat about an estimated delivery date because no one will be able to tell you anything concrete. It will just add to your frustration.

You got more from Vinisha than I did (and why the hell was I talking to her in the first place when I have a large-account manager I'll never know).

I have OC'ed my T9600 to max FSB (1333) without any stability issues whatsoever. It's running at 3.4 or 3.5 ghz (never really bothered to check). Thouth others have reported OC to 1250 on the FSB with crashes when approaching 3ghz. It's all a luck of the draw I guess.

So it's been an interesting past few days.

Dell contacted me again on Friday asking me to arrange another delivery date for the laptop! Of course I quickly got in touch and told them the laptop had already been picked up and sent them a copy of the receipt, only to be told they were very confused as they had received a monitor instead

After assuring them I sent no such monitor and providing as many details as possible on the contents and appearance of the box, they've now started an investigation with the carrier companies. Thankfully for me at least, they've confirmed that they believe my story.

Looks like someone has stolen my old PC. Even after all this something still goes wrong

Hey guys, just registered here to see if you could help me out with my M1730 problems. I purchased it from dell.ca in July of 2008 and it still has warranty on it, about 150 days left.

So I had my video card (SLI 8800M GTX) die on me Dec. 1, so I called Dell after pulling my HDD out and putting in in an old computer. The lady I talked to ran through the usual tech support business before sending me a box to ship my laptop in for repair, which I sent in on the 4th. She said it would be repaired in about 5-10 days.

After sending it in I tried kept track of the support status page on the Dell website, which was only updated once on Dec 11, with a description of BAD VIDEO-VID.CARD-VID. CARD and a call status of ORD and a call type of EXG, which I assumed meant that they had placed an order to exchange my laptop. The parts associated with it were BLACK METALLIC and 8X DVD+/-RW DL, QUICK SHIP..., CNB. I was unable to search the Dell parts section on their website for any details but I googled black metallic which turned out to be a color option for an M1710.

In the meantime I received no contact from Dell at all until I got a call from Purolator today.

Now I expected to be ending up with an M1710 and having to fight for a replacement of equal specification but instead I received my old laptop back along with basically a blank repair report where nothing was checked off except for one item saying "Because the estimate was rejected, we are returning the computer to you unrepaired." Even things that should have been checked off, like the line about it not having a HDD in it when sent in were left blank.

I've never heard of anything quite like this and I'm wondering if you guys might have some comments or suggestions on exactly what I should do when I call back tomorrow.

The number I was given just a few minutes ago when I called about a different xps computer was 1 800 232 8544. However, you will always be tranfered to the right place if you call the wrong one, don't worry

you should get dual 260, t9600, 2-4gb memory, windows 7 64 bit, 160+ hard drive. Accept nothing less and be pleased if they give you better.
Black metallic is also a color option for the m17x, and my dispatch page says the first two items of the replacement system too (black metallic). There is a chance they are sending or tried to send you an m17x without telling you... Or they where listing your old laptop. Is it black?

My m1730 was black with the red option. So maybe they did intend to replace it with an m17x. Certainly makes more sense then a m1710. In any case I guess I'll find out all the details when I call, thanks for the heads up.

Like 10-15% faster, and it has double the memory, though that doesn't affect the speed much except at high resolutions. Make sure it's two in SLI, just like your 8800 gtx was.

It depends on how you measure it. Gigaflops-wise the 260 is 30% faster than the 8800, and the 280 is 20% faster than the 260.

They should send you whatever color you ask for, they asked me what color I wanted.
