Just to be fair, the 4670 is a lot better than 10-20% of a SLI 8800M GTX set up.
Don't forget SLI does not provide a 100% increase.
@D13th: Are you in contact with Sunny via email or over the phone?
-
Both, dtwn. Mostly over the phone though. Never really corresponded over email other than from him to advise me that he called.

OK I am back because DELL did ship a replacement it is an M17x
The problem lies in the fact that my (4th) XPS had Dual 9800M-GTX's with 2048 MB memory, they shipped the M17x with a 1GB 260M.
I have had 4 replacements now. They took my T7600G processor away on the first replacement saying that is not what the PC shipped with but now they are admiting it did.
The origional also had the 7950GTX GO and when that burned up they sent the 8800M GTX's when those burned up they sent the 9800 GT's but I complained since the previous unit had the GTX's so they sent a tech out with the 9800M GTX's.
All was well until this PC burned up so to make a long story short, they are now saying I am only entitled to the 1GB 260M because of the origional specs of they very first PC. Has anyone ever had this happen to them?
I think if they are going to go back to the origional configuration they need to include an extreme processor?
I had a 4 year complete care warranty, have not gone longer the 7 months without the PC's burning up (which I have read was not an uncommon problem.) I have had to buy a second PC because I can't seem to have a PC last longer then 7 months, down time has been 6 months since I bought my origional 40000.00 XPS. I guess buyer beware> I did not know they could at anytime go back two years and well that is what that PC had. -
i just yanked my 8700M GT SLI board from my laptop because one of the GPU's had failed. i am having a hard time trying to find contact info for getting in touch with dell to see if they have any kind of exchange program for out of warranty problems.....
so, i'm interested in getting either a replacement 8700M GT SLI board from dell or some compensation for the failed board. the board still works and can be used in an m1730, but one of the GPUs no longer registers in device manager, sys info or the BIOS.
if anyone is knowledgeable of any way to exchange the card with a new one from dell or can give more insight on where i can sell it, please let me know. -
I cannot believe the Customer Service I have experienced today.
It took a TON of battling but I have finally received more than I could have ever asked for from Dell.
They are giving me a full refund of my M1730 receipt in lieu of all the problems I have had to receive with it, and that is a year later. $4775.
God bless you Dell. -
Nicely done. Worth it, no?
Congratulations. Now go buy yourself something nice.
-
Got my second replacement yesterday. All the hardware was correct this time, main specs in my sig the rest on page 113 of this thread. The only problem was that they included mcafee 15 month subscription but they installed it in Japanese languae so I had to uninstall and reinstall. They even gave me office basic again but I remembered that I already have office enterprise from the military discount. Aside from that, it is perfect.
Oh and on a side note, the secondary hhd caddy sata adapter and screws were already in the second hhd location.
It took about 2 and a half months from the day I sent mine in till today. I must have spent a whole lotta time with Dell so if you really want it that bad fellas, keep fighting and bugging them. -
I have recently arrived at the "oh crap" my XPS is broke and have spent the last week trying to get Dell to replace my 8800 GTX cards.
Having arrived here it's clear this will not happy any time soon.
Having read through the entire post on this issue I am going to try to get a replacement machine. It's clear than even if I do get it repaired it will die again in a couple of months.
I want to make sure that I get a like for like or better replacement and would like to know what you guys think I should be pushing for.

I have to say, I was very fortunate to have a rep who heard what I had to say, investigated the issue and acted quickly to make sure I was satisfied. The listed config was what I was offered from the beginning, and since it was a much better system than my original (I did the RAID0 myself on the old laptop) I readily accepted and did not see any reason to ask for more. I am very satisfied, and wish others here who are still waiting the best of luck in getting their issues resolved. -
so my lappy bsod today due to video card overheating chatted with dell support said they will send new card to tech to have card replaced? do they have video cards in stock?
-
So, my XPS M1730 has failed too, along with a seemingly endless list of others.
Seems I need a new 8800 graphics card and screen, which I was told would be fitted two days after my initial call to Dell.
Latest from Dell is that this has been delayed but no new date for repair has been given.
I am covered for almost three more years with on-site warranty so what is the best way to proceed for me now as it seems plain this repair is almost certainly never going to happen having read the experiences of the others on this topic.
Any recommendations of how to proceed would be most appreciated, thanks -

Hi Everyone, has anyone notice Dell UK have now removed the XPS M1730 and a funny thing the Alienware M17x is now not found when you try to customize
-
Does anybody know which countries(factories) are related with replacement of XPS m1730 to AW m17x???
-
My M17x was made in China, if that helps.
-
so the tech was scheduled to come over today to change my gpu.lol. he calls says parts are on back order . called dell first lady said cards will ship at the end of Jan. said i had to wait so I hung up, called right back guy tryed to give me 1640 for replacement said it was upgrade, lmfao, told him no sli, no 17 inch wuxga, no bluray not same or better. He said i will put in request for m17x replacement, said he hopes it gets approved.we will see what happens.
-
certainly go for m17x after the a03 bios is become the allpowerful as it would be in the 1st place i just got my m17x 6 weeks ago just bef xmas i fight withnthem for 3 months to get my 1.5 years old blowed up xps replaced with a new gaming laptop then i almost had 2 start it again in order 2 get my money back.but fortunatley they have to solv the problem and aw did amazingly fast...
-
Well I joined this forum for i am having xps issues. My system is out of warrenty. i have had the motherboard replaced and have had constant issues with the adapter and motherboard. I just had 2 adapter blow within the last 2 weeks. I'm alway unplugging and plugging the adapter to correct power to system. But even that has it limits trying to watch a video that jerky is no fun.
I finally got upset and carpet bomb dell. got a reponse within 24 hrs. they told me since its out of warrenty i would have to pay for repair parts. I told them i have been dealing with this since i've had the machine. it a limon and defective. after repeatly saying this it was decided that they would call back in a week to check laptop once i have a replacement adapter. This will not fix the problem. i'm lost on what to do. -
"Its an all different, better looking and engraved with the best technologies."direct quote from dell chat log when trying to get me to accept a 1640 replacment for my my dead 1730.

Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Sorry, I read that wrong.
But it's all meaningless. The 4670, regardless of how much power you put under the hood, is still a feeble 128-bit card. SLi performance is very good with new drivers. Games run at 60 FPS quite often. Even a single card has much more bandwidth than a 4670. -
still no word from dell just used unresolved issue link guess ill see what happens.
-
Hey everyone, I'm working on reading through this thread, but wanted to get some advice in the meantime.
My 14 month old XPS M1730 is also experiencing GPU failure, it blue screens everytime I try to enable SLI on my 8800GTX's.
Today I contacted dell chat for the first time, I was told the 8800's are severely backlogged and a system replacement was my best option. I asked for clarification on what system they'd be replacing mine with and they said the specs wouldn't be available for 1-2 weeks, but it would probably be a "refurbished system of similar or upgraded specs"
I see many owners here are getting Alienware M17x's, are they new when you get them? Should I accept a refurbished or stand my ground and insist on a new one? Has anyone else gotten a refurbished replacement?
They said to keep watching my order status page and the replacement would eventually show there and I could review the specs, but I'm tempted to contact them again tomorrow and press for a new replacement instead of refurbished.
Thanks
Paul -
you paid for a new system you should push for a new system. they told me the same thing and i told them i would not take a pc they piece together from parts of pcs people have returned.they also tried to give me a 1640 for replacement which they said was better than my m1730.how are they gonna get a new video card for a system when they cant get any to fix the pc in the first place?
-
What does next business day warranty mean has any one had there video card fixed the next day?the fact you have to wait two weeks just to find out what kind of replacement you are going to get is just asinine.it is so frustrating trying to talk to someone you cant understand on the phone.what happened to the "xps experience" .
-
After staying up all night and reading this whole thread, I think I will insist on a new replacement, not a refurb. I'm not going to bug them again today though, they said they would be in touch in a week or 2, so I'll give them a chance to respond on their own I guess.
I'm lucky that my 1730 is still working, I had to go into safe mode and disable SLI and one of the cards, but after that it starts up and runs ok, just slower. -
Next day only means that they are required to diagnose the problem within that period of time and start to take action on it. It's not the same thing as the business side guaranties with stuff like servers where they have to be there with a part within 4 hours.
With regard to new vs refurbished replacement, you can look at it two ways. Yes, you bought a brand new system, but at the same time you got over a year of use out of it. Therefore they could look at it as them replacing a year old system with another year old system of same or better specs. Depends on the rep you get. Funny thing - my original M1730 was a refurb, but they gave me a brand new M17x. Again, depends on the rep you get and who the paperwork touches along the approval process. You don't really have any control over it short of your initial contact. -
I think Dell has a rule that all replacement parts are refurbished. This generally means that they have to try to look for a suitable refurbished part first before they offer a new replacement. In the case of the M17x, there are not that many refurbished units floating around and I am guessing that most if not everyone who have been offered M17x replacements will be getting new ones. Mine was new and the rep initially said it was going to be a refurb unit. Also, I don't think they have any control over it, so calling them might not help and it will just add to your frustration. I have also had cases where a LCD display needs to be replaced and the box came with a refurb sticker, even though the replacement display looks brand new, and the sticker says it was manufactured 2 weeks ago.
This whole point about calling to demand for a new system is totally absurd. You have had your old system for over a year, so how do you justify demanding Dell give you a brand new system. They may give you a new system in the end but this sense of entitlement is simply greedy and mind boggling! -
when you buy a piece of tech for over two thousand dollars you expect to get more than a years worth of use out of it.for someone who bought this laptop after this problem was discovered i feel I should have been told about this design flaw of this laptop. There is no since of entitlement just want dell to permanently fix this problem not just keep replacing parts with defective parts. Before you get all holier than thou why dont you read this thread to see what some of the people went through.
-
I would be fine with a refurb if it has been taken care of as well as mine has, but how am I to know? I'm on top of maintenance and all of that, but if I got a refurb that's previous owner wasnt, even if its the same age, it would be a inferior system. If they send me a refurb, it had better appear to be brand new... because thats how my 1730 will be going back to them. -
The only problem with getting a refurb is that it is just a temporary fix from what i have read this problem is a design flaw with the nvida cards.I just think a refurb is like putting lipstick on a monkey.
-
yeah, after reading this whole thread thats kinda my thinking too. I havent had any problems with my 1730 before this, but I sure seem to be in the minority. Until a couple weeks ago I've been very happy with it. Ive still got 2 years of my warranty left though.
-
My XPS is leaving on monday and a full refund its on its way... It was good while it lasted...
-
how tough was it to get them to issue a refund? I'd much rather have that than even a M17x since the 4500 I spent on my 1730 would buy a much higher spec'd M17x than what they've been offering most people. -
Well I explained i was reaching 97ºC when playing hd and the computer would shutdown playing games and they issued on wednesday a service call for today, they told me an engineer would contact me yesterday, but noone did, and at 5pm or so the manager of the guy who issued the service call called me explaining there was a delay on my part and that he was offering me to wait or a refund... I accepted a refund and gave him all my bank details, however, i just got a call from the engineer who was supposed to come today saying he was coming... I told him that I was getting a refund and that he didnt have to come... Lets see how this ends.
-
tech is coming to put 9800m gtx sli in my 1730 today? we will see
-
tech just left 9800m gtx installed ran occt for 30 min never got above 93 dec works so far.?
-
I cringe hearing those temp numbers looking back from my M17x. Dell should never let the cards get that hot, but I digress.
-
93c is very hot dude, mine is hotting 95c - 101c at the moment in OCCT
surprisingly never got a callback from customer relations. Oh wait i did. 1 missed call all day, tried to call them back and engaged tone. Waste of time. -
93c is very hot in my opinion... since mine are at that temperature and I really feel like the computer is about to take off (space shuttle style) or blow up.
-
so new card is showing artifacts. Got in touch with dell who said the system replacement is still happening should get specs this coming week. They really have no clue what is going from on person to the other. Why would you send a tech to replace a part on a system that is getting replaced?

Hi, i have recently had a brand new XPS M1730 replacement from Dell but was wondering, i the original version (2 years ago) the physic card was separate card but in today version which is 3-4 different motherboard version away is the physic card installed or are Dell using intergrated physic on the GPU?
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Dude, all 8 series and above cards support CUDA PhysX, which is now the new name for Ageia PhysX; Nvidia bought the rights.
To be honest, the Ageia card wasn't needed to begin with because for the most part, the GPUs can handle PhysX even better.
It is a shame though that some of us had to buy into the market crap and pay extra for the Ageia. -
So UPS didnt show up today... I called both Dell and UPS, Dell said that it was india who bocked it so they will tell India to contact me... UPS says that Dell didnt contact them and that i have to wait...
What a waste of day... -
Ouch.. I would have confirmed shipment prior to taking a day off.

update. 2
Been told NO REPLACEMENT SYSTEM. Ive been offered a refund of £2300 plus my gfx card upgrade of £439.54 and my 2 yr warranty extension of £90 i think.
Apparently DELL dont offer Alienware AS REPLACEMENTS for DELL machines lol. Altho i was offered a replacement machine with a balance difference.
ok then whatever -
Dell does, or at least they did. Maybe they had a policy change since I got mine.
-
they didnt call me again today... i just hope they didnt cancel the refund...
-
Ok here we go, 6 months ago i recieved a 1730 for replacement of a 1710 .2 higher processor and sli 512 instead of single 512 card, i was happy, at first..... i am now waiting on 5th graphics card to get here. i feel like dell wants to just keep throwing these broke graphics cards and MOBOs at me till my warranty runs out in Nov. they say i am lucky cause i got upgrade from 1710 already LOL HELP what do i do to make dell admit that this is problem with 1730 and 8700 cards. why are they sending me 5 graphics cards in 6 months and sending other people M17x??? thanks for any input very frustrated of amount of downtime
-
So i called them today again, and the engineer said that Dell cancelled the pickup... dont know why... so he is investigating...
