They've been out and replaced various bits including two sets of GPUs in the last couple of weeks, and have talked through software/driver updates, but it's still not working. I just don't think that £500 off a new laptop is a fair response for a machine that is in warranty.
Thanks
-
Thanks, I've reported it to the unresolved issues departement, but still have the technical people calling and offering £500 as a trade in, I'll give it a day for the email to reach the right people at unresolved issues.
-
It's not a fair response... that's a cop-out on their part. Of course, they want to sell you a new laptop to replace the one that's costing them money. That's a win for them and a lose for you. They need to step up and do the right thing and stop trying to trick you into spending more money to save them money. What they are offering in terms of a discount is about the same as what it costs them to replace your defective 8700M video system with a 9800M GTX SLi setup.
Good, glad you reported it. Let's see where that leads. Most people get a response with 24 to 48 hours. The Unresolved Issues Department has generally been good at helping sort out this type of problem. Apparently, the fact that morons are employed in call centers is universal knowledge... thus, the department has a reason to exist.
As for the sales people, ask them to stop calling you unless they are going to be offering you a no-cost system exchange for a computer with equal or better specifications. Let the sales people know you will not be considering purchasing a replacement system while yours is still under warranty, and if Dell does not take care of you in a satisfactory manner under warranty, the next system will be purchased from a competitor. Just ask them point blank why they are trying to cheat you rather than fulfilling their contractual obligations under warranty. -
I said that I'd reported it to the unresolved issues departement to the guy that called me just now, but he wasn't aware of any such departement (he seemed to think that his line leader would get it). It's the technical support people that are calling me at the moment, but I'll give it a day or two until the "unresolved" people get in touch.
The other option is to let them replace the cards *again* but I just find that frustrating, and can't help feeling like I'll then be back to square one in a couple of weeks.
-
I don't actually know, i didn't see when he was putting it in, but am reasonably certain it's a 8700m GT. Is there an easy way to find out, short of opening it up?
The BSOD issue has been solved by running the OS repair option off the the XP recovery disk, so far it's fine, but haven't tried anything that would stress the GPU yet. -

Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Usually they replace it with Alienwares with similar or on par specs.
At least those with 8800m GTX/9800m GT and GTX are getting the R2 m17x with Crossfire HD5870m.
Those with 8700m SLI should get an m15x or m17x with only one GPU.
The predominant factor seems to have or not have an Xtreme cpu. Those with standard penryns (like T9500) are getting Core i5 or the lower Core i7.
The Xtreme users (x9000 mainly) are getting Core i7 Xtreme as well.
Its up to them anyway, its hard to understand how the system works. -

^^ a big lol and
for my roomie.
Dell had a dispatch yesterday and shipped it today.
Guess what they shipped??
Downgraded XPS M1730 with 2.4 ghz instead of 2.5 ghz and everything else with same specs..
weird... -
Try downloading the newest drivers from NVIDIA. Uninstall the old drivers, then run Driver Sweeper to delete everything related to NVIDIA. Reboot when prompted by Driver Sweeper and then run CCleaner to remove all registry entries for the old NVIDIA drivers. Then install the new drivers you downloaded. Doing this will ensure that Windows is correctly recognizing the hardware Dell had the field tech install on your system a day or two ago. This will also help clean up any additional corruption that the OS repair operation missed and ensure the best possible performance.
At this point, go into Device Manager and expand the device tree for Display Adapters by clicking the plus sign. You should then see a device name (2 devices for SLi systems) with the description of your display adapters. Those lines will contain the name of your display adapters, such as NVIDIA 8700M, 8800M, 9800M, etcetera, along with GT or GTX. Hope you find this helpful. -
Does anyone know what an XPS702 is please? I'm being offered one and told it's better than my old 1730.
Thanks -

Say hello to the XPS L702X (Updated) - Dell News and more -
Thanks, it's not a top range gaming laptop is it. I'm going to say "no thanks" to that.
-
Good call, Majic. It's not the equivalent for multiple reasons, not to mention multi-GPU, alloy chassis, and display resolution. Them telling you it is better is a matter of personal opinion, not fact.
However, I looked at the info on the link, and it might actually outperform your system if they provide you with an i7 CPU and the most powerful GPU and the highest motherboard and display options available. Ask them if they will give you a 15-day trial with the option of returning it for a full refund on your M1730 purchase price or an exchange for an Alienware if the performance does not equal or exceed the M1730. That would make you appear to be flexible. But, if they say yes tell them you need a commitment from them in writing to avoid complications with them honoring that agreement. If they say no, tell them you need an M17x R2, since that is the closest computer Dell offers to the M1730 at this time. -
Thanks
I'll reject it on the basis that I think I'll be stuck with it if I say yes. I might actually go for a desktop instead, a little less expensive would suit my needs. Not really the forum for it, I realise, but I was going to offer to pay the difference above what I originally paid for my 1730, seems equitable to me. The base Aurora ought to be quicker for gaming than the M17 should it not?
Thanks.

hey thanks for the advice really appreciate it. so this is what happened. they originally offered me a xps l701x and i canceled that dispatch and told them it wasnt an equal system. after being told i would be called twice, they didnt call, so i went back and talked to them and they want to offer me the xps 17 again. told them it wasnt equal for the reasons you mentioned and now they are gonna call me back on monday. i havent yet resorted to the unresoloved issues link, i will give it another try but then i will have to use that link you posted. . . thanks again for the advice ill let you know how it goes. -
Great, bigee! We look forward to hearing about it. Have a nice weekend.

They are again creating a new dispatch...
4 dispatch and a downgrade replacement in 3 week.. -
As an update, I've agreed to accept £750 credit as trade in for my old 1730. In fairness to Dell this is around 50% of the purcahse price on a 3 1/2 year old machine. They offered to fix the machine again, but frankly I wanted to upgrade and would have been more annoyed if they fixed it thereby removing my opportunity to upgrage at a reduced cost!
Thanks for your help. -
Good call. I think they are being very fair with you. I doubt you could sell it used for that much. Are you going to get another Dell or an Alienware? For what it's worth, I love my M17x R2.
-
On the basis that I don't actually need the portability of a laptop I've gone for an XPS 8300 desktop with 24" screen, blue ray, i7 processor, 2x1TB Raid 0, 8GB ram, an HD5870 card and a sound blaster card with 4 yr warranty all costing me about £660. This ought to be fine for gaming (BF2 BC and one day BF3) for the foreseeable future.
-
Nice! And a good price, too!
-
hey guys.
dell wouldnt replace my second m1730 for an alienware. they were offering me ANOTHER m1730, i know these are in really bad shape especially the ones with the 8xxx graphics. so i asked for the 9xxx and they offered to send a tech to replace the 8700 in my second replacement. i think this is fair, and hey if the system works ill be happy.
so all in all i got 120 gb -> 320 gb
2 gb -> 4 gb ram
and
8700 sli -> 9800 sli -
I would like to ask for some advice please.
I have an XPS 1730 (still under warranty) which has recently had the 8800 gtx gpu's and mother board replaced. The replacement gpu's are the same 8800 gtx cards. In several months, I am going to be taking the notebook overseas longterm where there is no Dell tech support (even though I still have warranty). I am worried that I may still have defective gpu's that can die on me at any time. Is there some way to check to see if my particular gpu's were made during the defect manufacturing period? Do you think I could call Dell and ask them to install gpu's that are not affected by the defect? I do not really care about getting any type of gpu upgrade but want to make sure that I don't have defective gpu's that might die on me when I am overseas since it is not feasible for me to send the notebook back to the USA for servicing.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards. -
I agree, fair and square. You did good.
Yes, and I would say that is a very reasonable thing to expect them to do. -
Hello,
Here is the address for Dell Canada Unresolved issues: Dell Canada Unresolved issues
This service is only available for customers with a valid case or reference number.
Q1. How we obtain the case or reference number ?
Q2. What is the best between the two video cards below:
1536 (MB) NVIDIA GTX460M GeForce
1024 (MB) AMD HD6870M Radeon
Thank you
-
just got the 9800 gtx sli. its a refurb :/ but so far games run great, no issues or overheating
just wondering how much better is the 9800 gtxsli compared to the 8700 sli? -
A1. By calling Dell Support and working with them on the phone to resolve an issue that ultimately does not get resolved with their assistance. Hence, the name for the "Unresolved Issues" department.
A2. To some extent, this is personal preference. It depends on how you define what "best" means. But, here is a link to benchmark comparisons: PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmarks - High End Video Cards -
If you recorded any benchmark results with your old system, you could run the same with your new system for comparisons between the two systems to see "how much better".
Here are some benchmarks: PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmarks - High End Video Cards
The best measure of "how much" would be your real world in-game experience. -
Had a bunch of stuff replaced on my M1730 today: monitor, blu-ray, both stick of ram, video cards, motherboard, probably other stuff too. I wasn't given a receipt or anything so I'm not sure exactly what they did. I asked for a receipt but he said he didn't have one to give me.
Most parts were the same. The monitor is different, not sure what I had before, some sort of truelife WUXGA. New one is a Samsung SEC5443, seems brighter/glossier/very reflective. The video card was a terrible downgrade, so I will have to get that replaced again. I had dual 9800M GTX, now I have dual 8800M GTX. I thought there were also problems with the 8800M GTX's, am I wrong about this? The repair man also put a big scratch across the entire top of the case, and a few others, and scratched up my kitchen table. I'm a little worried they also screwed up other things.
The changes also put me back to BIOS A10, is there any reason I should not upgrade back to A11?
I'm really not looking forward to dealing with Dell again. Last time took multiple phone calls, some were over 3 hours. They kept telling me I was experiencing software issues. They told me if the problems persisted they would replace some parts, and I finally had a technician come repair it 3 weeks later. I really just hate Dell XPS warranty service. The Dell representatives don't know what they are talking about and have a poor understanding of how to troubleshoot issues and always make me repeat the things I had tried myself before I called them. -
With my system the upgrade to the A11 BIOS made my fan and temp fluctuate randomly. I have the X9000 processor so not sure how that will affect you. I love he sound of the fact I do not have to deal with Dell again
After today I am sure I will not. I do not want to make this lengthy but I wanted to update on my progress. Ultimately, Dell is shipping a refurbished xpsm1730 which I will have to take the time to open both up and start swapping hardware. They could not match any of my upgrades so they shipped one as it was originally shipped (so they say). I am through going back and fourth with them. All they had to do is send me a new power brick and a new battery and it would have saved them money and me the inconvenience. Anyways, the hell with Dell! As long as my machine works I am happy to get 5+ years out of it. I will just get a different system if I ever need one.
-
Before Dell did all my replacements today I was on A11. My fan was on and noisy all the time, and the laptop would heat up really bad. I even had the laptop do an emergency shut down after overheating, as well as some other issues which also may have been related to the A11 BIOS. Your BIOS issues confirm I was likely right in thinking A11had caused many of my computers problems.
-
Well, so far Dell has no record that I had 9800M GTX's. I just spent two hours on the phone with some Dell rep. They are going to try and track down my old ones and go from there...
-
HELP!
Just got my M1730 back from Dell Depot 48 hours ago after 3 three home visits. Now, 5 motherboards, 3 video cards(9800GT) and 2 hard drives later, Dell has returned it to me with ANOTHER motherboard and a 8700 video card (wait! isn't this a lower card than I had?).
Started it this morning and it ran great!
Until 10 minutes ago.... now, the power light is flashing and it wont turn on at all... battery or plugged in. I have over a year left on my warranty, and I am DONE with these repairs..... any advice?
Reading up and seeing that the blue light on the power brick(?) goes off, sounds like it must be the motherboard..... again.
Unacceptable.... I feel like at this point, the repairs are wasted. Any suggestions ... or will I be stuck in this cycle until my warranty expires?
Thank you all in advance
scott -
Well I don't have much experience with this but their warranty terms say,
"If Dell or its authorized representative is not able to repair the product, we will replace it with a comparable product that is new or refurbished."
I do not know if they have a stockpile of refurbished m1730s though, if they do you may just get another one unfortunately. I also don't know how long it will be before they determine the laptop cannot be repaired. Try your best to argue that your laptop is clearly beyond any state from which it can be repaired. If you feel you are being treated unfairly, I would contact the Dell Unresolved Issues department for your country. That apparently can be beneficial. -
Hi im after some quick advice if i can on comparing specs from my m1730 which dell are going to replace with an m17x,
Not being very computer literate ive no idea if what there offering as an exchange is fair.
I would be gratefull for your speedy replies
many thanks in advance

As far as I can tell, everything looks good to me. I'm not sure what you old monitor was, you can check that in your BIOS. The new 17' WUXGA 1920 x 1200 is probably equivalent though.
I'm not sure if "500GB Serial ATA (7200RPM) 500GB Serial ATA (7200RPM)" means 2x 500 GB (probably does), make sure it does though as dual in Raid-0 is faster and you had 2x in the m1730.
Make sure the BD-ROM is BD-RE (with read/write) like your last one though.
CPU upgraded from dual core X9000 --> quad core i7-840QM. This is not an extreme CPU, make sure you get an extreme CPU.
You are getting an upgrade in ram: 4GB (probably 667 MHz DDR2) --> 6GB 1333 MHz DDR3.
Windows 7 Premium --> Windows 7 Professional.
Dual 8800M GTX --> Dual CrossFire 1GB ATI GDDR5 (probably 4870s or 5870s).
It almost all looks like major upgrades as far as I can tell. The BD-ROM and CPU need corrections though. I wish I was in your position. Dell is refusing to replace most of my parts with their equivalents, and Dell Unresolved Issues Canada also refused to help me. I HATE Dell. -
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
That is not an upgrade by an invoice-standpoint.
His CPU should be an Extreme. I am interested in his interests as per Dell policy. If others feel otherwise, then I respectfully disagree.
Blu-Ray Writer should be offered as well since he had one on his original system (BD-RE).
--
Ask for an Extreme CPU since you are entitled to one in your replacement; do not give in to any depreciation arguments.
Extreme CPU for Extreme CPU -- end of discussion. -
Yes, you are right about the CPU, it should definitely be an extreme. I missed that.
-
I think as far as specs you are probably better off. It would really depend on your usage. Like many corporations Dell looks out for them selves. They tried to replace my m1730 with a refurbished one configured at the time it was bought. No way it is up to par with all the hardware upgrades. In your case Dell is probably trying to do the same thing. You may have the upper hand if your config was bought with all the specs you listed. One of the on-site techs told me that the Alienware hardware goes through a comprehensive test on the hardware rather the assembly line China ones. Which probably why my system had so many issues. If you are in warranty only accept a replacement that is equivalent or better. If your system works and has minor glitches just work them out yourself or ignore them until Dell offers you the right system.
-
hi thankyou for all your advice i will email the agent to insist that they replace with an extreme cpu.
One quick question is i bought this laptop from a dell reseller as quickest way to get the specs i wanted at the time obviously with the 3 year warrantee, so would i still be in my rights to insist on cpu upgraded i dont want to rock the boat to much and they make a uturn on what theyve all ready offered me.
i Understand dell has no more bluray writers and are all read only so was going to ask for minimum of two years next day hardware support(only because ive never used my old drive to burn blurays)
ill hold off on email to i get a few responses
again thankyou for all advice so far
Edd -
Just got the email from Dell giving me the specs on my replacement system...wanted to post here with what i have now for advice on whether it is a comparable swap. Can I log into Dell somewhere and get a listing of my original specs? Current M1730 is dead and wont boot to list them.

Again, thank you for all of your guidance and advise... it is VERY appreciated! -
It is an upgrade, your call to if you think it is acceptable. considering the specs of your m1730 i think its fair.
-
Yup push for the Xtreme cpu. As for the bluray, i would just let that one go tbh. My M1730 had a bluray writer and my new M17x has a reader only but i didnt push it because i got a huge upgrade in every other component much like you.
I dont forsee them extending the warranty considering the cost difference between the reader/writer and the cost of a upgraded warranty. -
Thank god i found this forum!
I have had my graphics card and motherboard replaced countless times! and a few days back, even after replacing my graphics card, motherboard, lcd, harddrive, my system still isn't working normally.
They are actually asking me to go for the "Collect and return" service where they will collect my system and repair it before returning it to me.
But now I have escalated the issue with Unresolved issues and I shall wait for their reply in hopes for a replacement! -

I received the replacement back in may 2010, since then, I've had to replace the graphics card on the m17x for the crossfire issue.
Dell sent me the new 5870 cards, so both primary, secondary and crossfire cable for that problem.
So free $1,100 upgrade
Good luck

Recieved a call from Dell, in the Past Month Dell has Replaced my Motherboard 6 Times, the GPU (DUAL Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT SLI) 5 Times, the Ageia Physixs Card 2 Times, the Keyboard, The TRUSTY Samsung LCD, and the Speakers.
They have offered to replace my system and will send me an email with the 2 preposed sytems. I was told as the XPS M1730 has been discontinued they will have 2 find another system either from Alienware or their smaller XPS Range, and that the preposed systems will be to equal to or better than my current system. I will upload my System Details and when i recieve the email i will upload the preposed config system and would like your advice to see if i am getting a good offer.
Something is going on with Dell Customer Service because this is happening when im 3 years out of warranty its great will definatly get another dell or alienware. When its time

I had issues with my M1730 and just got a replacement ordered on 4/11/2011.

They offered me a new XPS 17, but after saying that I needed a gaming computer like the 1730, they offered me the M17x-R3 instead. So if you wanted you could probably still get a little bit better and go with the Alienware instead which I think is more comparable to the M1730. The supervisor that I spoke to said that it was his decision to give whatever he wanted so don't let them tell you it's not possible to get something better. It takes a bit of convincing but can definitely be done, Good luck! -
Was your system "Unrepairable"? or just repaired a lot of times? Trying to get the dell technician to replace my system is quite hard, even though i have called for dispatches for more than 10 times.
