Owners of M1730 what a mess I got in. I was taking apart my XPS to clean and upgrade the CPU and to my amazement when I tried to remove the LCD display cable from the board side I tore out the connector. Is this still fixable or I have no choice but to replace the board? I am including a picture with the broken connector sitting on the metal cooling fin. I was giving quote of at least 150 to fix but considering the area where it is at and how it broke I wasn't so sure what they said could really be done? Otherwise a good working replacement motherboard cost just as much as the fix would and plus the connector is intact. So fix or replace in your opinion and be reasonable ok.

I did order a used board to replace the one that broke but if anyone can give more insight that would be greatly appreciated. I see if this replacement LCD display connector works and if all works out then I be happy but will learn a hard lesson. Look front, back, top, bottom before taking things apart that doesn't come out easy.

If you are good at soldering it looks like it might be repairable, but the picture quality isn't good enough to see the extent of the damage. Basically if you've ripped out layers of PCB along with the connector, it's hosed, but if it's just the solder coming off the pads, there's some hope.

Actually it did rip out...that is the problem...the shot didn't show it but yes the copper did rip out so that bascially hosed a working board. Tech from eBay said they could fix it but when I asked how with it ripped out they couldn't tell me or thinking why tell this guy he might fix it himself but I was like heck no I am not going to fix it. But still the fact they couldn't tell me how they would go about fixing that damage tells me they most likely would damage more then fix it. Even if they said they could fix it that kinda damage looks bad. I would upload the picture of the real size but the site didn't allow it so that is why it was resized so that is why you can't see the copper layer that was ripped out. But hopefully the replacement board works and I be a happy camper again and this time learn a valuable lesson check both sides of the connector to see how it secures and comes up before pulling on it.

Well reporting back I got the replacement board and it has Rev A01 as where the old one was Rev A00 and that part was redesigned with two small slits to facilitate easier removal of the plug. The used board look good and installed my T8100 into the socket and memory and reassembled the laptop and powered up the unit and it recognized and booted right up and reconfigured and restarted again and is working again. I will upgrade later to the X9000 Intel Extreme and look to getting 8Gigs installed and that will be the extend of the upgrade the GPU might be a future look. But as of now it work and feel satisfied was going to buy another board just as backup but thought well the CPU cost the same as the board so I have to go with the CPU for now and see if another board comes up for sale again to buy. So now I am back in business just have to fix the latch that was had one broken hook when I bought it but that is not that expensive to fix. Later this week will start my software reinstalling and see how everything else goes.
