First there are some issues with this laptop.

    1. The keyboard around the space bar, n, b area seems to have loose underlining plastic. Basically it sounds like there is a some loose plastic under those keys when I press it.

    2. It froze up a few times during booting.

    3. The plastic vent piece is not flush with the rest of the chasis.

    4. I can see heat being an issue

Since I reinstalled Vista, the freezing issue seems to have been fixed.
The vent peice can be pushed in a little so it doesnt stick out as much but still not perfect. However, the keyboard issue is a bit annoying since the affected keys are harder to push.

I got a question about the power management. Whats the main difference between dell's "recommended" and "balanced" found in Vista?

When the laptop is not plugged in:
Dell Recommended will turn the screen off in 3 minutes, and Balanced will turn it off in 5.
Dell Recommended will put the computer to sleep in 10 minutes, and Balanced will do it in 15.

When the laptop is plugged in:
Dell Recommended will turn the screen off in 30 minutes, and Balanced will turn it off in 20 minutes.
Dell Recommended will put the computer to sleep in 60 minutes, and Balanced will do it in 60 minutes as well.

I don't know if there are any other differences between them.

I hope you are enjoying your new notebook!

Not exactly a ringing endorsement..... guess it's too early to make any final conclusions though.

    Congrats nonetheless!

Don't get me wrong, this laptop is solid, however they need some serious QC. There is no way that my system shoud've been shipped that way. Both the issue with the vent and the keyboard is workmanship problems. The vent just needs to be snapped back however the keyboard thing is quite annoying. I'm gona try to open it up and see if I can reseat the plastic piece.

The crashing is probaby from a specific hardware driver because it occurs very specifically, for ex. always when I try to go to device manager or do the Vista Experience Rating. After reintalling Vista and updating all drivers its fine. Also I did not install any of the Dell specific software except for the one where it says I should before reintalling OS and the power management.

However I can understand if some users are turned off by this machine since most of us expects a working problem free computer out of the box.
