How do you get the screen to stay off?

I have power options set to turn off the display after two minutes. I also have my Dell Instant Launch Manager button set to "Turn off display". However, many times when I turn off the display, or it turns off automatically after two minutes of not being used, it pops on again immediately.

Even when nothing on screen is changing and I'm not touching keyboard or mouse, the display will repeatedly turn on, even though I turn it off. There are no wireless devices connected (no wireless mouse, etc.)

What is it sensing that causes it to turn on? Is there any way to lower the sensitivity? Is there any way to turn off the display and keep it off until I want it on again?

That happens with my desktop pc. I have the Logitech MX5500 BT keyboard and mouse but when I am watching TV or something, I set the mouse on the charging cradle and after the display turns off, it would turn itself back on 10-30 minutes later. I never figured out what caused it. I now use the MX5500 with the XPS15 but haven't experienced the issue.

Whenever I'm using my Logitech wireless mouse I have the same issue. It's hit and miss though, sometimes if I move the mouse a bit then let it go, the display will turn off and stay off.

This may not resolve any of your issues, but I had the exact same problem with my Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000. I couldn't figure for the life of me what was causing the problem - I had the latest drivers, checked and doubled checked the settings and everything! (I had previously pinpointed it to the mouse causing the display to turn on again)

Until one day fiddling in Device Manager there was a whole list of "devices" for the Mouse; systematically I found that disabling "USB Input Device" under "Human Interface Devices" worked a wonder. I have never had any problems since and disabling that category hasn't had any adverse effects on the mouse functionality.

Hope this might help in some way :)

OP: Is the wireless adapter or similar set to allow the system to enter sleep in device manager?

Matix: I had the same issue years back with my MS mouse. There was an update provided by Microsoft that fixed the issue, it boiled down to the mouse thinking it was receiving input after 5 minutes (or some time like that) of non-activity. I think the patch boiled down to similar to what you did.

Toronto, I will assume you aren't moving the screen when it "wakes". That's the only thing I can think of that might be doing it, so I've got nothing. Perhaps an uninstall/reinstall of the touchpad driver?

Yep, I found the updates but funnily that didn't do anything to fix it. (maybe again it's something with the drivers). Anyway it works now, hopefully OP can find solution.

Not moving the screen, not touching anything. In fact, even when I can get the display to turn off, after leaving it sitting untouched on the table for a few minutes the display will turn itself on.

    Thanks, good thoughts.
I don't see any equivalent to Wake on LAN in this BIOS.
USB Wake Support is set to Disabled.

The laptop is not always asleep when I want the display off. I may have music playing or torrents downloading.
