XPS m1210, lovely machine, still using it, want to replace it soon, I don't know why.

Anyway, i've noticed a glaring problem over these times, I'm unable to get the drive to read (or write to) CDs/DVDs.

The machine/drive can read official discs, i.e. DVD movies, or DVDs that came with magazines, Windows CDs, software CDs, basically anything I paid for.

But it will not read CDs/DVDs with data/music/movies in them that I have made myself or by someone, and it won't even write to them either (I tried making a movie).

I'm not quite sure why. I had windows XP when it happened, but recently reformatted and put Vista on. Same results. I doubt the OS has anything to do with it though.

Plugging an external drive in is OK though. Anyone got any ideas?

try updating the firmware to your drive. That usually fixes some issues
