    Hi all.
I just thought I'd ask if anyone had any ideas about this!
I had done a wipe and install last week. I even took the laptop apart to re-seat all connectors because the monitor was flickering (solved that problem).
All seemed to be perfect until late Friday night when the XPS stopped charging. It can run from the battery just fine but can't run from AC power or can't charge.
I tested the current and the 19.55 v is flowing through the charging unit & onto the Motherboard.
What I need to know is: Does this mean explicitly that the Mother Board is beyond repair or is there any method I can employ, bar buying a new MoBo?
Dell will not entertain me as the laptop Service Tag is not registered in my name!!!! I know for a fact that the extended warranty does not run out until 12th of August, so need this advice pronto!
    Cheers Guys

Why is the machine not registered under your name? Have you tried transferring the ownership?

That being said, if you're sure you're getting power onto the motherboard (and thus don't have a bad jack), you've probably got some sort of board failure that will necessitate a replacement.

I'm trying to get in contact with the guy I bought it from (2nd hand purchase) never thought about transferring ownership at the time. Figured it was the mobo, but was hoping there was a fix I could tackle myself!
Any info about availing of the extended warranty if I don't get to transfer ownership?

If you need like... cheap... parts (ie install disks or a memory cover, etc) I've been able to get those without having the machine in my name, but for more expensive parts, there's pretty much nothing you can do.

As long as you can power up the machine, you can transfer the warranty with this page. Run IE (it needs to be IE) as administrator, and try to validate the machine with "Find My Service Tag". If that works, just fill out your information, and the transfer *should* be instantaneous.

Else you'll need to enter the service tag and express service code and there's a chance the transfer won't go through instantaneously.

I do appreciate the help. Doesn't look like I'll be able to use the authentication method cos the battery is dead @ this stage. Plus, as I am in Ireland, will it still work? The XPS has a US-layout keyboard. Obviously it can't originally have been bought here given the evidence.

If it originally shipped in the Americas, you can still transfer the warranty if you know the name of the original owner, or the owner to which the laptop is currently registered. You just need to find the international transfer form. If the laptop's ownership was already transferred to someone in Ireland... you might not need to do it (use the international form).
