    Hi Guys,

I have been contemplating using my m1330 as a more permanent desktop solution with only occasional mobile use (for various reasons). For this purpose, I am planning on hooking up a Dell 2007FPW monitor and a wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I wanted to ask if it would be a wise idea to leave my XPS m1330 closed (disable hibernation with closed lid), but turned on during use. The m1330 will be connected to a Zalman NC1000. Due to space constraints, I will be having a monitor stand, underneath which will rest the m1330, and on top the stand, the Dell FP monitor.

Pertinent system specs: T9500 2.6 GHz, 4GB RAM, NVidia 128MB GeForce graphics, 64 GB SSD.

    Thanks!

yeah, but why don't u use the extended esktop thing where u use both the external and native screen/ fyi, u should have gotten a better computer for this. the 8400m gs is not that powerful.

Space is the constraint here. And honestly, the extended desktop wouldn't really be useful. I am not going to be doing anything heavy with this system. By "desktop" use, I just meant fixed in a physical spot without much movement. I will be ocassionally using the m1330 for some modelling with Chem3D/Hyperchem but nothing too intensive. I am just really concerned with the heat issue. By keeping the screen closed, I dont want it to overheat.

Overheating CPU should not be an issue. as long as you do not block the bottom/rear vents.

Overheating GPU on the other hand, is another issue all together, but that depends on the apps (games) you run.

I have my M1330 serve at times as a media ctr plugged to an external display via HDMI.

The GPU was also my main concern. Luckily for me, I don't do any gaming, but even with a Zalman NC1000, I usually see temps in the mid to 50s (degrees C) for GPU temps.
